I think this is one of those things for which I can use an expression some of my undergraduate students (i.e., the youngest ones) use on occasion:

I remember when I was a small child back in the late 60s. My mom would take me along with her to the hairdressers(thats what they called it back then lol). I recall the noise of the hairdryers, the smells, the ladies with the bouffant doos. And the whole time I was bored as hell and wishing it was me getting my hair done too
