I agree with Bionca. Self-medication is risky. I live in the middle of nowhere and I still managed to find a trans-friendly doctor willing to help me. You just need to do some research. I actually contacted the state's GLBT group, I forget their name, but there was a branch dedicated to transsexuals and they recommended both a therapist and a doctor.
If you don't have insurance, the anti-androgen Spiro is not that expensive at all, and injectable estrogen (which I use) lasts a few months per prescription. I'm not sure about pills or patches, but I'm sure it's doable. The only costly thing without insurance would be the doctor visits.
Please avoid herbals. They do more harm than good since you need to take a boatload for any effect. A doctor can help make sure your HRT is going smoothly and can adjust your dosages accordingly.
