Ha! Ok the tech geek in me wants to know what you're running to get new registrants into the thread title... that is just awesome.

Probably just a simple script? No need for a web crawler or anything like that, but if you had to, a Python script could easily do the job as long as you have permissions.

Well I was sort of interested in the specifics since a friend of mine runs a forum where they currently manually greet each new registrant which is a tad annoying for the site admins. I've not seen the functionality elsewhere but I figured it was worth asking.

You will have to ask the site owner how new registrants are greeted as he is the only one who has access to that part of the site. You can find his name on the homepage of the forum by clicking on the bar "View Forum Leaders".
