I hope Texass runs out of oil soon.

Quote:
Texas' GOP House of Reps, noble guardians of our morality, have passed a bill requiring any public college with a resource center on "alternative" sexuality to provide equal funding to one promoting "traditional values," presumably like date rape and other beer-fueled heterosexual rampages. Young Conservatives hope this will ultimately close centers that "encourage folks who consider themselves homosexuals to go on considering themselves as such." Because God forbid we are allowed to be who we feel ourselves to be. People march here, an outraged protest here.

Equal time? You've got to be fucking kidding me. The entire culture is heteronormative. You don't need counseling centers for people for straight people. How often are heterosexuals attacked because they're straight?

This is like the people who claim same sex marriage is a special law because it's only for one specific group, which completely denies the fact that only heterosexuals can get married.

That is "balance" for "balance's" sake. That is to say: it's not really about balance and neither should it be. Intolerance should have no say.

Is this the same people who ask for creationism to have equal time in the classroom?

Today I raised a motion in the faculty senate at my university to protest this outrage at Oklahoma State University, where a faculty member has been denied tenure because she is a transsexual and her "lifestyle" is offensive to the Baptist beliefs of the vice president of academic affairs. I also submitted a motion to specify that our university can NEVER use any such reason for denying tenure (not that we would, but it's good to put it on the record).

Here's the story:

I'm not familiar with rules in US, but I don't understand, what religious beliefs, lifestyles, sexual orientations and transgenderism have to do with State University? State University must be equal for all citizens, students and stuff without discrimination. Private faculties could have some different rules, because they are private property and it depends on owners.

I don't know where you're from. Each state (what are called provinces in most other countries) in the United States has its own rules. Some national rules supersede those, but when it comes to many social issues there are no federal protections. So, a state in the "Bible belt" -- such Oklahoma, the state in question here -- often tries to get away with shit like this, until a court case makes its way into the federal system and, perhaps, the federal justices overrule the state's decision.

The United States is not a land of equality for all its citizens with respect to religious beliefs, lifestyles, sexual orientation, and transgenderism. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar.

I'm from Europe, more exactly from Slovenia and State University here means it is state/national property and is equally open for all citizens without discrimination. But as you say, every country/state have its own rules and laws.

The United States has no universities that are "national" except for the so-called service academies that train military officers.

As for "discrimination," it is a specialty in the United States, whether explicit or implicit.
