You're probably a better skater than I am.

It is true that knowing how to skate is a definite plus for playing hockey. However, as Jen surely knows from the days of her beloved Broad Street Bullies, as long as you can get from one end of the rink to another with a high stick, ready to slash or body check, you don't need to be too good at the actual skating part.

Yes, but can you trip head first into the U.S. goal in the Olympics? Then you would be tripping with Sidney Crosby.

No, Jen, I was just making a point about skating skills. But if you want to be compared to Dave Schultz, that's your perogative. The question from me, then, would be whether you would be beaten in a fight by a player 20 years older than you.
![]() I'm thinking of the Tim Horton incident here. ![]() Another question would be whether you can carry a tune. Have you ever heard Schultz's recording of "Penalty Box"? For a guy who holds the record sitting in the box, he ought to be a bit more familiar with "how it goes"! ![]() Ah, memories ... But really, in the immortal words of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, "I kid. I kid." |

End of 1st period, Switzerland 0-0 USA. The Swiss has been a stubborn team during the Olympics.
Will Canada start with Luongo or Brodeur tonight against the Russians? Brodeur's Dual Citizenship was obviously affecting his mind on Sunday night, he didn't know which team he was playing for. ![]() But Luongo conceded 2 goals on only 23 shots against the weak Germans last night. ![]() |

Doesn't look like that's going to happen. The United States is now up 1-0, but there's still 15:53 left in the third period.

An interesting conversation at work today. One of the guys mentioned how piss poor and disinterested Brodeur is in the net. All bets are on Luongo for the rest of the Olympics.
Another interesting point, shadows. I mentioned to one of the guys at work today your comment about Pronger. I said I couldn't remember the name and before I could describe your post anymore the guy said "Pronger, he shouln't even be on the team." That's the general feeling around where I work. So you are not alone in your opinion, shadows. |

The US team ended up winning 2-0(the second goal was an empty netter). Hiller was great for the Swiss, and he totally kept them in the game. A little more luck for the Swiss and they just might have pulled off the upset victory. Alas...

4-1 Canada after 1 period!

Well, Luongo has given up 3 goals now, but I still think he's a better choice right now than Brodeur. Plus, the offensive firepower that Russia has is the best one of all the teams currently in the Olympics.
Thankfully the Canadian offense is a tad better in this game. It is currently 7-3 Canada. |

And it's unlucky the Swiss drew the USA in the quarterfinals, I wonder how well they would've done against Russia, Sweden or Finland? Quote:
BBC are going to show Canada-Russia from 2:30 AM GMT (in about 40 mins), I thought they'd give us highlights of the 1st period and then go live for the rest of the game. Wrong. So I tried to avoid the score and then the man on the public address system at the short track skating said, "Canada 7, Russia 2." This was followed by a huge cheer from the crowd. ![]() ![]() ![]() So I gave up trying to avoid the score and knowing you'd post in-game updates here, I no longer needed to avoid the hockey thread. I even watched the Czech Rep beat Latvia last night on the BBC, they aired it without, yes without, any commentary. No there wasn't a technical hitch. It was the oddest experience, watch live sport on TV with all the crowd noises but no one describing the game. ![]() |

I've seen part of a game without any commentary, due to technical problems. The best description I can think of is it was somewhat eerie.

Jeez, nearly an entire page while I'm logged out, nearly a play-by-play of the Canada victory over Russia!
I think it's funny that Jon Miller and Joe Morgan have come up. One thing you have to give Joe Morgan credit for: there is no other baseball broadcaster I know of who routinely gets away with saying the same thing twice, again and again and again and again, over the course of a game. Jon Miller is a horse's ass, too, however, so they are made for each other! |
