This is my first time reading through this thread, and the post that hit me the most was smc's about the woman in the restaurant. I agree with Fran's assessment of what happened. Smc, I also think that perhaps the woman was perhaps a little flustered/embarrassed at the rude comment that your friend had made(and rude stares/comments earlier in the meal). She may have gotten caught off-guard with that comment, as she was sitting there enjoying herself when the rude comment came.

Lots of respect to you for at least trying to rectify the actions of your friend, and for giving him what-for afterwards. Not everyone would do that, and some people would even join in on the name-calling! I am glad to see that you are not one of them. You are a good guy.
