Lots of stuff happened. I won't bore you with a long list.
Suffice it to say that the standout event was when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7 (which pretty much dictated the course of events globally for the next few years).

1976 - Some Highlights

-My Birth
-Cambodia is renamed Democratic Campuchea.
-1976 Winter Olympics open in Innsbruck, Austria.
-The first 4.6 miles of the Washington, DC subway system is opened.
-Apple Computer Company is formed by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. The Central Railroad of New Jersey is bankrupt and Conrail takes over it's operations.
-London to Washington, DC Concorde service begins.
-The Seychelles became independent from the United Kingdom.
-North and South Vietnam, divided since 1954, reunite to form the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
-The citizens of the United States celebrate their country's bicentennial.
-NASA releases the famous Face on Mars photo, taken by Viking 1
-A major earthquake in China kills thousands of people.
-The Eagles release one of the biggest-selling albums of all time, Hotel California.

October 28 - Gary Gabelich drives the rocket-powered Blue Flame to an official world land speed record of 622.287 mph (1 001.452 863 km/h) on the dry lake bed of the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The record, the first above 1 000 km/h, stands for nearly 13 years.
November 14 - Southern Airlines Flight 932 crashes in Wayne County, West Virginia; all 75 on board, including 37 players and 5 coaches from the Marshall University football team, are killed.

December 23 - The North Tower of the World Trade Center is topped out at 1,368 feet (417 m), making it the tallest building in the world.
December 31 - Paul McCartney sues in Great Britain to dissolve the Beatles' legal partnership.
