I'd say in this context the quotes are appropriate, since the word is used to identify a role played during sex rather than the person playing the role. Since sexual positions and social activities are arbitrarily divided between the sexes, even though that division breaks the second they are applied to people quotes seems to be a good way to make a point without reinforcing social conditioning that rarely actually works.

I have read the sticky regarding ungendering, and do apologize if the quotation marks around the word female was, could be, or might have been taken as sarcastic or derogatory. It was not intended in anyway to be perceived in that manor.
It was only implied towards the entire content of the sentence (regarding transgender/transexual titled and promoted porn with the transgendered person being completely passive in every respect) and not to be taken out of context for interpretation. Much like I used the quotation marks around guys in the previous sentiment.

I'll omit quotation marks in my future posts.
