4-1 Canada after 1 period!

Two things of note. Luongo is playing well and the offense is alive for the second straight game. This bodes well if it continues.

I hope they keep it up. It's about time they showed their true potential.

Luongo always puts his full effort into every game that he plays.

I agree. I believe that the home crowd is pumping him up big time! You can't really fault Nabokov for the score(except for maybe the 4th goal) as the defense in front of him has been horrible! That was the knock against the Russians going into this game, and they are certainly proving it to be true.

Nash finally got a goal, Boyle has a goal and an assist(his play has picked up considerably from the first couple of games).

And as I am typing this....5-1 Canada!!!!!!

Looks like the USA were wrong to have a dig at Canada for only narrowly beating the Swiss last week. They're a tough team to beat with Hiller in the side.
And it's unlucky the Swiss drew the USA in the quarterfinals, I wonder how well they would've done against Russia, Sweden or Finland?

Even after Sunday's loss to the USA, it never looked like Canada couldn't still win the gold. They just needed to be more positive and hope Brodeur stopped making odd mistakes or go for Luongo. I can't see them losing a repeat match against USA.

BBC are going to show Canada-Russia from 2:30 AM GMT (in about 40 mins), I thought they'd give us highlights of the 1st period and then go live for the rest of the game. Wrong.

So I tried to avoid the score and then the man on the public address system at the short track skating said, "Canada 7, Russia 2." This was followed by a huge cheer from the crowd.

When have you ever been able to clearly hear anything that anyone says over a public address system, especially when it's transmitted via the television?

So I gave up trying to avoid the score and knowing you'd post in-game updates here, I no longer needed to avoid the hockey thread.

I even watched the Czech Rep beat Latvia last night on the BBC, they aired it without, yes without, any commentary. No there wasn't a technical hitch. It was the oddest experience, watch live sport on TV with all the crowd noises but no one describing the game.

I've seen part of a game without any commentary, due to technical problems. The best description I can think of is it was somewhat eerie.

Kind of feels like you might have gone deaf, eh Ila? Eerie feeling is correct.

I am deaf, but only when certain individuals are talking.

The worst thing is when the crowd's cheers tell you something is going on, but off camera, and there is no one commentating to put you at ease.

I wish they'd taken the commentary from the Canadian broadcasters. It was a good fightback by Latvia.

Perhaps they didn't have anyone that could speak either of the languages(for their "home" feed) of the two teams you mentioned, or they didn't have any english speaking commentators that knew who the heck was playing. It wouldn't be much fun to hear "And...somebody passes to...er, well someone else!" "And he makes the save!" "Wow! That goalie is great! I just wish I knew his name!".

You may jest, but on Sunday during the Canada-USA game the 2-man commentary team consisted of 1 Englishman and 1 North American (not sure if he was from north or south of the border), and I swear from the mid-point of the 2nd period the American's voice just vanished.

It sounded like he'd had enough of all the novice crap his English colleague was churning out, and he'd left the commentary box and gone to the bar.

For all I know it was probably the Englishman's first week describing hockey games.

If they use him for the final it will be a disaster.

A shame that the Englishman's first week describing hockey games was also his last.

No, I think his 'hockey commentary career' will last a whole two weeks.

I feel your pain, dauls. You should hear some north americans trying to describe a football (soccer) game. In short, the commentary is usually a disaster.

Yep, too true.

Only thing is I'm relieved I've never heard an Englishman cover baseball. We'd all be phoning/e-mailing the stadium/TV company to explain the game to him. He'd make Joe Morgan look good.
