It does depend on the context, though. And also the person. I have, most certainly, several Asian trans-woman friends who object to the term "ladyboy" (or its local versions) and prefer just to be called "woman". At least when referring to themselves... :-) It's an issue that keeps flaring up, and my experience is that it also depends on who you are - a little bit the same as the socalled n-word - as an African-American you can use it without a problem, but don't do it as an outsider :-) So I guess it all boils down to how the receiver perceives your intentions when using a particular term.
