I think the alcoholism aspect would make him more human for lack of a better word. These heroes are larger than life and seem unstopable. By showing him hit bottom it would make him more of a hero to sober up and suit up than just him making new armor. Does that make sense?

That's the charm of MARVEL of old there heroes were more human SPIDERMAN was a teen with great powers and yet he had trouble dating and fitting in, DC heroes back then had no such problems Batman would beat the Joker and Robin would be with him big smile and say neato.
