Get a doctor to prescribe them - an endocrinologist if you can. The oral estrogen pills at the level needed to begin transitioning can seriously wreck your liver, cause blood clots, deep vein thrombosis. None of these is good and can kill you.

I understand some gals can't afford the doctor, or live in an area where they can't find sympathetic medical help. I STRONGLY urge you to try the doctors first.

I agree with Bionca. Self-medication is risky. I live in the middle of nowhere and I still managed to find a trans-friendly doctor willing to help me. You just need to do some research. I actually contacted the state's GLBT group, I forget their name, but there was a branch dedicated to transsexuals and they recommended both a therapist and a doctor.

If you don't have insurance, the anti-androgen Spiro is not that expensive at all, and injectable estrogen (which I use) lasts a few months per prescription. I'm not sure about pills or patches, but I'm sure it's doable. The only costly thing without insurance would be the doctor visits.

Please avoid herbals. They do more harm than good since you need to take a boatload for any effect. A doctor can help make sure your HRT is going smoothly and can adjust your dosages accordingly.

Good luck!
