I forgot that I played in the “good old days” when we sometimes won. Today, “Purdue Pete” and his teammates got beat 35-7 by Penn State.

One of my former students (and a linebacker from our NAIA National Championship team of 2012) follows me on Twitter. He knows a lot about football. More than me...

He had this to say before the game: “Purdue’s offensive line is going to get their '3rd string' quarterback killed today.” Currently the Boilermakers are 1-4. Ohio State is 5-0. They will still beat IU. That’s like a National Championship around here.

(The last picture. I forgot, Mitch Daniels is now Purdue's President. He was Governor of Indiana and Director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget under Bush. Jischke was President when I was there. Also I'd change the jersey to Women's Volleyball "17." )

Purdue University’s most famous alumni has to be Neil Armstrong, first man to walk on the moon. However, “Purdue Pete” is the “gift that keeps on giving.”

Of course! We are an Engineering school. Let’s 3-D print a bunch of heads! (Note: Technology doesn’t always mean better… Or that you should…)

I never got into "Star Wars." It was several years before my time and when interest picked up again in the late 90's I felt "too old" for it. The first time I ever saw it was in 1997. The 20th anniversary. With my girlfriend. Good make out movie...

Although I thought Darth Vader was awesome. The best line in the movie is when Harrison Ford says "It's WORSE..." A line I've "borrowed" many times.

But Princess Leia! I had no idea.

Other schools’ mascots: Alabama “Big Al.” Penn State “Nittany Lion.” Duke “Blue Devil.” Michigan State “Spartan.” UCLA “Bruin.” I had a chance to play at “State.” Should have stayed in Michigan. See last picture.

Schools like Purdue have a tough time compared to schools like Alabama or Duke. Money and recruiting is a large part of it. It's big business. The only two in the “Big 10” that are even close typically are Michigan and Ohio State. My dad said it used to be known as the “Big 2 and the Little 8.” That was many years ago. Purdue has never won a National Championship in football although it produces some very good players and some exceptional Quarterbacks: Drew Brees, Bob Griese, and Len Dawson come to mind.

Alabama has 17 National Championships in football. Purdue has 0. So Pete will just have to hang in there… Sorry dude.

(UCLA, Alabama, Clemson, Duke, etc. also have cheerleading squads that rival some pro teams. The UCLA cheerleader shown is my “future wife” and has been featured in other posts. However the NFL and NBA can get away with much more… Perhaps none is better known than the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. The last picture is the Chicago Bulls dance team.
