Super Bowl III, January 1969. Today many of us will gather to watch Super Bowl 53 with friends and family (especially in the United States) but if it wasn’t for this game 50 years ago we might not be.
The first two “Super Bowls” (officially called the “AFL/NFL Championship Game” were blowouts with Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers beating up on the Chiefs and Raiders in 1967 and ’68. Many “experts” did not think the “upstart” AFL was at the same level as the more established NFL.It was a bold prediction from a young quarterback from Alabama named Joe Namath that would set the stage for a real showdown between his New York Jets and the heavily favored Baltimore Colts. Namath was signed in 1965 for the then record salary of $427,000. According to ESPN, Patrick Mahomes contract for 2019 may top $200 Million. At a press conference during “media week” someone in the back of the room shouted out “The Colts are going to kick your ass.” Namath responded: “Hey, I got news for you. We’re going to win Sunday, I’ll guarantee you…” The Jets won 16-7 and while many “old school” football fans thought it was a disaster, Pete Rozelle (NFL Commissioner) was quoted as saying it was “the greatest thing to happen to pro football.” Rozelle must have been right, media interest has never been higher and for this year’s game 30 seconds of advertising will cost $5 million. Known as “Broadway Joe,” Namath was a popular figure with the media and maybe the first “modern superstar” of the NFL. Known for dating popular actresses and models he also “defied convention” and made enemies by wearing his hair long and sporting white shoes while everyone else wore black “high-tops.” In 1985 he was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 1970, the Kansas City Chiefs would go on to defeat the Minnesota Vikings as the two leagues merged into what we now know as the “AFC and NFC.” The rest is history. Play action! Namath passing from the pocket. Emerson Boozer (32) gains yardage as Bubba Smith (78) is blocked. Smith (6’7” 285 lbs.) RIP (1945-2011) is one of the greatest defensive linemen in history. If you weren’t around back then, you would most likely know him from the “Police Academy” movies. Only 66, a possible cause of death was the “CTE” suffered during his playing career. Finally, Namath handing off to Matt Snell (41) who scored the game’s only touchdown. The other photos are of Namath “out and about.” The commercial with Farrah must have been filmed in the 70’s when she was on “Charlie's Angels.” The other pictures are talking with reporters before the game and dating Raquel Welch. It’s good to be the Quarterback.

Planning a trip to see my family in Detroit over Spring Break. Doing a little research on “Detroit History.” This was “Milky” the Twin Pines Dairy Clown.
Many, many, years before my time clowns were popular on local Detroit TV. My mom said she was terrified of this one. Don’t blame her. Does he “creep you out” too? He does me. The last pic is from a psychology website. Interesting comparison… ![]() (Not that "Milky" was an evil person. Although I'm glad he wasn't my math teacher. For whatever reason, clowns have definitely taken a hit in popularity lately. But I'll make an exception for Harley Quinn. )

Glad you like the pictures of Jen.
She's ahead of Hayley and Taylor in this post. She's also an awesome drummer (and singer). Check out the picture below. Finally I know what I want to do with the rest of my life. ![]() ![]() ![]() Quote:
Will have to see if our local Wal-Mart has one.

![]() Sitting next to me is my best friend ila, both of us snicker at the seemingly simple problem written on the board. In seconds we have solved it. Just to be sure, ila uses his slide rule to verify the answer. It is correct. Raising our hands he calls on ila who confidently gives the answer. “That’s what I got too” I say. “How many of you got what Andy and ila got?” the teacher says mockingly. Most of the class raise their hands. But, too late, it’s actually a trick—a trap! ![]() “No. You are all WRONG” so you all FAIL! HaHaHaHaHaHaHa…” ![]() ![]() ![]() (Sorry but that’s what the picture of Milky made me think of. Don’t know what this really was. Probably some kind of magic trick. Have to believe it couldn’t be as easy as it seemed. Wonder what Milky’s “solution” was? After waking up from this bad dream, I fall asleep again. This time Harley Quinn is my teacher. For some reason, in this dream I am grown up and in my 30's. I have been a bad boy so she has kept me after class for detention. We are alone in the classroom. As she walks seductively towards my desk I can see the outline of her hardening cock beneath her tight, short, satin mini-skirt... )

This is what I’d like to have if I ever took up drums again. I did a little research and it’s a 1978 Ludwig “Octa Plus” kit. The shells are stainless steel. Notice they are single headed. Twelve drums, double bass… the excesses of the 70’s and 80’s. Awesome!
Why am I thinking of “Rush” and Neil Peart? ![]() Anyway, it looks great for a set that’s older than me. Wish I looked that good. ![]() Can’t imagine how loud it would be. Also there was no price listed. Sure it’s part of a collection. I would think they might take my “ZR-1” as a trade. Even 40 years ago all that would have cost several thousand USD. Also no cymbals, stands, pedals, hi-hat, etc. Besides my wife would never let me bring that thing into our house. Even down in our basement you could hear that clear to Chicago.

Decided I was right in the first place with the "Spiderman" drumset.
![]() Found one on Amazon right away (Shit, no wonder Bezos is a Zillionaire! ). Here are the "technical specs": Reig Spiderman Drum kit 5-Piece Price: $46.94 International product from outside the United States. High-quality drum set for children, robust plastic body. Audio / video motivation: Learning, Entertainment, Musicality. Suitable for children 3 years and up. (That's me... )Box contents: 5-piece spiderman drum kit consisting of bass drum, cymbals, 2 side drums, 2 drums on separate stands, professional pedals, poles and stool. (Me: "Professional" pedals? I bet they're just like Dave Lombardo from Slayer uses. Speaking of Slayer I could order two sets at that price and have "double bass." )Now I just need to get in touch with Jen to sign up for lessons.
