Yes its dangerous to do it unless you have been stretching for a long time, and i dont mean couple weeks. If you are pretty healthy and no back problems you can stretch for couple months/years and eventually be able to do it. I do agree size and body weight has a lot to do with how soon it takes you.

Ive been doing it for a while, once you get to the point where its not painful or unpleasant all you can think about is how good it feels!
