Ten or twelve years ago, I was sitting in the famous Tinker's Cafe on the main street in Woodstock, New York, having a mid-afternoon lunch. It was nearly empty, but for a family that was just about ready to leave as we sat down.

Of course, music was playing over the speaker system. As the family got up from their table, "Sultans of Swing" came on. The young son in the family, barrel-chested boy, about 10 years old, suddenly pulled away from his mother who was holding his hand and ran up onto the small stage in the restaurant (which has music every night; Bob Dylan played there often in the early 1960s). He grabbed a microphone stand (there was no microphone), bent it down, and began to sing along with Dire Straits. My friends and I watched with delight, while the boy's mother and father seemed both horrified that he might be interrupting our lunch and proud of him at the same time.

When the song was over, the boy jumped down from the stage and rejoined his family. As they were leaving, the mother came over to our table and said, "Sorry, he goes crazy every time that song comes on. If we're in the car, we have to pull over so he can get out and dance, or else he moves around so much that my husband is afraid he will make him crash the car."

With that, she smiled, turned, and left.

I always think of this when I hear the song, and it brings a big smile to my face.

Now lost in the amazing sounds of The Cocteau Twins....surely some of the most achingly beautiful music ever created. Elizabeth Fraser has the voice of an Angel. Impossible to pick any one track, but try "orange Appled" or "Summerhead" or "Calfskin Smack" for starters....then you will be hooked and searching the entire collected works.

I got deathwing three years ago.
Put it on MP3 and went on holiday the same day.
I played the album five times and was totally indifferent to it.

I got home and was about to give the cd to a charity shop.
But I played it one last time, but this time on my HiFi:
Cyrus CDp, Pre + mono blocks, Dynaudio 140 speakers.

Oh wow! The album was stunning!
I've now got most of their albums.
To appreciate them, one really needs to hear their albums on decent HiFi.

Jodie,

I am V interested in your reply. I have my Hi-Fi (turntable based) in storage and my main music feed at home is iPod running thru a Bose dock station - competent enough for such a small system, but knowing that S WIlson has remastered mant of PT's albums and re-issued in 5.1 format, I must renew my acquaintance with some real hi-fi again, this time cd based. Am tempted by the Rega player.......Sorry if this has gone slightly off thread.....

Default Small Hours....

Here in BrisVegas (local joke amongst us Antipodeans), its heading towards the wee small hours.....perfect time for the smoky, lazy drawl of John Martyn - Gotta be "One World"...what a talent, and never received the acclaim he deserved.
RIP Big Man.......this one is dedicated to Sal - wherever you are......

Have you heard PT's very limited cd
We lost the skyline"
An acoustic set Oct 2007 live I love that
esp. Track 5: Normal A mix of acoustic, with Trad heavy metal rifts and prog rock like P.Floyd . Stunning.

I love their newish album, The incident' esp as some of it's style is reminiscent of P. Floyd's Animals album
{but for frak's sake don't repeat that to Steve Wilson, he hates being compared to them}

As to off thread, yes it is.
I'll do a new thread in a few minutes.
