I find the word insulting and would not use it. If any of my trans friends choose to use this term that is their right. Just as I wouldn?t use the word ?queer? except perhaps where it is used formally as in a description of curriculum such as ?queer studies? at a university.

On the toilet thing, I've noticed several universities and clubs in the UK have started doing this. Apparently it's because some individuals depending on how far they are along in transitioning, may feel uncomfortable in the men's and women's toilets.
