It seems that the term "shemale" often refers to transsexuals in the porn industry and also to "escorts". I find the terminology somewhat confusing and vague. We have the terms, transvestite, transsexual, tranny, tgirl, shemale, ladyboy and femboy. Everybody seems to have their own opinion as to which term is appropriate in which situation. However, I think it is generally agreed that they are all "girls", right?

Just to clarify: my point, of course, had nothing to do with whether you referred to them as girls, but the statement: "However, shemales are also in it for the money."

On the internet porn sites, the term shemale seems to be the most frequently used label for transsexuals that pose for porn videos or escort or both. Tranny is also used but seems to have a more positive connotation. The few comments from transsexuals I have seen suggest that they don't like the label shemale. Bionca says tranny is ok depending on the connotation.

Yours is an interesting rationale for using the term. It might be worth examining what other terms you would feel comfortable using based on how they are used elsewhere or by others. I am not drawing a conclusion, only suggesting food for thought.

In any case, I hope my friend Bella Bellucci, who is a member of this site and does occasionally post, will enter the fray and explain how the term "shemale" became widespread on the Web, who was largely responsible, and whose interests it served.
