It really depends who you ask... I find it more offensive that you don't take the time to spell 'transSexuals' correctly than I find the usage of the term 'Shemale.' And, obviously, I'm taking some liberty with the word 'offensive' (i.e. - I'm not really offended).

For those who identify as truly 'Transgendered,' you'll find that, on the whole, they are loathe to be described as a 'Shemale,' which, as you may have noticed by now, is mostly used to describe girls in the porn industry. So, I'd say, unless you know the person is involved in the porn industry (and I mean more than one or two pictures), you should not be throwing the word, 'Shemale' around to describe Transsexuals.

Grooby covered things pretty well. "Shemale" is a rather derogatory term confined to the porn industry. Most transgendered people I know take offense to the term.
