When he arrived home, he realized that he had failed to pick up one of his packages, and that it had been left out on the sidewalk. Thank goodness no one returned it, lest he fail to be taught the valuable lesson that he shouldn't have helped the woman. Next time, he will be more careful with his possessions and not allow good will towards others to get in the way of his appointed rounds.

What's the word for this kind of thinking? Asinine!

A woman was sitting at the park reading a book on a beautiful summer day. Suddenly, she heard a young boy scream. She looked up and saw a man carrying a toddler towards the wooded area at the park's edge. The boy was crying and saying he wanted his mommy. The woman quickly ran to the corner where there was a parked police car and informed the officer, who ran the would-be kidnapper down and rescued the boy. The mother who had been frantically looking for her wandering son was enormously grateful. The woman felt great as she walked home. But when she arrived home she realized that she had left her book on the park bench. It had her name and address written on the title page, but thank goodness no one bothered to return it to her, lest she get the wrong idea that there are circumstances under which your own possessions might not be as (or more) important than, say, the well-being of child.

What's the word for this kind of thinking? Senseless!
