Default Measuring Up

This was in the news today for whatever reason. I guess everything is measured thesedays...

Quote:
“According to the NFL Network, Trevor Lawrence (Clemson QB, likely to go #1 in the 2021 draft) came in at 6 feet 5 and 5/8 inches and 213 pounds. He also had a hand size of 10 inches, with his arm measured at 31 1/2 inches with a wingspan of 78 1/4 inches.”
Many years ago “Dr. Andy” played football in college. Don’t ever remember anyone measuring my hands however. Although I never played Quarterback. This made me curious how I’d “measure up.” So after stretching my right hand to it’s max, I faced the judgement of the tape: 9.5”.

Curious, I looked up other NFL Quarterbacks. Apparently this is a “thing.” Makes sense since the ability to grip the football affects throwing or catching. Here’s what I found:

Quote:
“Average hand size for a quarterback is now 9.6 inches. Some of the top short quarterbacks (6-2 or shorter) of the past decade have ridiculously large hands — Drew Brees (10.25 inches), Russell Wilson (10.25 inches) and Brett Favre (10.38 inches). The average length of a male hand is 7.44 inches.”
Just how serious is this to the NFL? Read about it here:

“Dr. Andy” has met Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and Andrew Luck. I guess I would say Peyton is definitely taller than me, Drew is shorter and Andrew Luck is similar in height. Shaking hands with them I would say their hands seemed at least as big as mine. Didn’t really think about it.

Tom Brady who is also just over 6’4” reportedly has only 9.38” hands. Poor guy. Bet he’ll never make it in the NFL. Besides he’s too old... And Patrick Mahomes hands come in at a relatively “small” 9.25”.

("Dr. Andy" could also not help noticing the "R squared" of .01 in the scatterplot below. So I guess it's what you do with what you have. Sound familiar? )
