Playing Devil's Advocate, does anyone know if the Japanese themselves see a distinction between the terms ' New-half ' and the term ' Transsexual ', e.g. Are the term synonymous from the Japanese viewpoint ?

It has nothing to do with the "bottom half." The term new half comes from the Japanese ニューハーフ (nyūhāfu, , which literally translates as "new half?); < ハーフ (hāfu means "half"). Culturally, the "half" part of the Japanese term is a crude reference to "half male, half female" (irrespective, despite Elonar's suggestion, of actual body parts), whereas the "new" part refers to the newness of the self-identity the person is making. In other words, it is someone who has made at least a mental, and possibly a physical transition from man to woman. Thus, it is the general term used in Japanese culture to describe transwomen with male genitalia, either pre-op or non-op.
