There's a few normal size volcanos on top of it, that erupt occasionally and relieve the pressure, sometimes too much, so that the entire region collapses and you've got magma going everywhere.

There is no evidence the Yellowstone caldera is on the verge of eruption. However, 600,000 years ago it did erupt and covered much of the US with ash, all the way to San Diego. An eruption of this magnitude today would essentially destroy the US and turn the world into a perennial winter for years.
