Be glad you live elsewhere-Interview with an Iranian transgender

It was an interesting read, albeit a little disheartening. It talks about what our Persian sisters have to go through as transwomen. :respect:

It's a tad long but definetly worth the time! :)

Thankyou for this, postman. It is very interesting and well worth reading.

Yes, a very compelling read.

The interview subject touches many bases, and virtually all seem underpinned by the inequities of religion, especially the religion known as Islam, which has a long history, past and present, of gross intolerance towards anyone or anything that doesn't have a penis and identify themselves as male in the broadest terms possible.

Some interesting points in that interview include:

- The concept that many homosexuals may be having surgery to lessen the burden of being gay. According to the interviewee, liking members of the same sex and gender may bring even more agony and suffering than "merely" being trans.

- The concept that a female who transitions to a male may also suffer less agony and suffering, both biologically and sociologically, than a female who transitions to a male. The interviewee speculates that this is because a male-dominated society means that men are more "valuable" than women.

- Not so much a point or a concept, or anything new, sadly, but just to note the staggering corruption that exists at every level of the legal system and in health/medicine in places like Turkey and Iran. As bad as things are in the West, in the good ol' Middle East, everything is all that and more.

- Again, not really a point or a concept, but I hope that that person has survived (transcript is dated July 2007), and is now living, or about to be living, in Canada, as they indicated they were making arrangements for.

Some of the things which happen in the middle east are horrifying, though we in the west are largely to blame, for screwing up Iran's monarchy so much that a revolution could take place, our sponsoring of religious rebels during the cold war, and as far back as our poor handling of Israel's formation, leading to events which incited even more conflict and religious extremism...

As I so often point out - making a big deal of something causes more problems than it solves. This massive overemphasis on "Celebrating different cultures" we have here right now is the main reason the BNP ever managed to win seats, since it emphasises that "these people are different to you", in turn making people react on instinct, sometimes people who would otherwise not have cared one way or the other. If you ignore differences between people, they tend to be more accepting of what we all have in common. It's certainly something I see affecting us as well. I see far more cases of violence or reactionist anger against transexuals occur to those who make a song and dance at pride events than to those of us who live stealth and are simply accepted as women/men (Usually women, I only know one FTM)...

I imagine had Iran been able to continue developing as a more progressive nation, eventually their success would have slowly bled into neighbouring nations eager to get in on it.
