I agree with you 100%. His attitude(and the fact that he acts like he won the Stanley Cup whenever he scores a freaking goal) really rubs me the wrong way. Sidney Crosby is a far more respectable hockey player than Ovechkin.

I also hope that Crosby can play in the 2011-2012 season.

I must say that Game #5 was a nail-biter. Both teams had numerous chances(Tanner Glass, how could you miss that empty net? LOL!:eek::lol:), and it was anyone's game right until the end.

Whether the Bruins win or lose, Tim Thomas will win the Conn Smythe trophy.:respect:

I'm not sure what it is about Ovechkin. He has boatloads of talent, but he also has been known to skirt the line between a good hit and a dirty play. He also tends to pout and likes to cherry pick empty net goals. I believe that is one of the reasons the Capitals bowed out so early this year(plus the fact that Backstrom pulled a vanishing act!).

I guess the only solace that I can take from tonight's game is that they got a couple of goals past Thomas(and almost a third). Hopefully the Luongo that showed up in the home games shows up for game 7. I also think that Luongo will have a very short leash next game, and if it looks like he is struggling, I am sure he will get an early hook.

Game 7 on Wednesday. It should be a doozy!

It's hard to imagine that Game 7 will be yet another 1-point victory by the Canucks. It's hard to imagine that yet another game in Vancouver will be won by the Canucks simply because the Bruins team didn't get the "break." It's hard to not to think that this Game 7 will be the anomaly of this series.

The Canucks now have 2 embellishment penalties in this series. So, the only thing we can say conclusively at this point -- and I'm sorry, my Canadian hockey fan friends on this board -- but that kind of bush-league crap seems to be (with the exception of Ovechkin ... see posts above) a uniquely Canadian practice this year, the purview first of the overacting, ham-it-up Montreal team ("oh, look, ref, he hit me so hard that I fell down and flew 20 feet across the ice") and now of Vancouver.

Even though there is still one period remaining, I don't think there is any chance for the Canucks to tie it up. Pretty pathetic showing by them tonight, so much for the guaranteed win. How many times can Vancouver get scored on shorthanded?

The better team(at least in the Finals for sure) is probably going to win the Cup. Even though I think that some of the Bruins got away with stuff that should have been penalties(not this game, but during the series), they outworked the Canucks in the end. The Canucks had a 2-0 game lead and then they totally fell apart after that(except for game 5).

I do think that Vancouver would have gotten more calls going their way had they not done so much diving. I don't like diving, so I don't like that aspect of the Canucks. No matter how well they played before the Stanley Cup, they will probably be remembered for their choke job in the Finals.

I also think that this will probably crush Luongo's confidence going into next season. He let in way too many bad goals this series, and I don't see it getting any better for him next season.

Thomas will deservedly win the Conn Smythe trophy, as he has stood on his head throughout the Finals(he's had a shaky game or two in the Tampa series, but beyond that he has been stellar). So he will get the Triple Crown(Vezina, Conn Smythe, and Stanley Cup). That's a pretty good year! I wish the Leafs had him(although I still like Reimer:)). I'll bet that Kaberle is happy that he accepted the trade to Boston.;)

Your "imagination" was correct.;) No one-goal game tonight! I will admit that the Canucks have been guilty of diving(which I dislike), but some of the Boston plays have been bad as well. Neither team can claim to be angels this series, but in the end the one that played with more heart(they could have folded up their tents and went "home" after losing the first two games, but they picked up their game and totally turned it around!) is going to win the Cup.

If Vancouver was to lose, I would have preferred the one-goal loss as it would at least have been exciting to the end. Being down 3-0, and with the Boston defense clamping down and blocking shots in front of Thomas, I don't think the Canucks will even get a goal!

BOSTON BRUINS WIN THE STANLEY CUP

On Saturday, June 18, there will be a parade beginning at 11 am from TD Bank Garden to Copley Square in Boston to celebrate the Bruins winning the Stanley Cup.

I would like to invite all my hockey-loving friends to join me. The drinks are on me, all day and into the night. I realize the low likelihood of anyone getting here, but on the off chance that you'll be in Boston, let me know. I'm serious about picking up the tab.

I'd certainly enjoy the whole celebration. It's too late to get a flight though and by the time I drove down the parade and celebrations would be long over.

Just as the football hooligans in Europe and the UK don't represent true football fans, those rioting in Vancouver certainly don't represent hockey fans. There would have been riots regardless of the outcome of the game. It's a shame (disgrace?) that such jerks spoiled the end of a good series. The good news is that there were a lot of photgraphs taken of the criminals and there is a Facebook site to post pictures so that the criminals can be identified. As of early this morning, Vancouver time, there were 20,000 members of that Facebook site.

Shit like this pisses me off. The worst part of the whole thing is that the scumbags doing the vandalizing/looting aren't even the true hockey fans. They would have done this crap whether the Canucks had won or lost. Pathetic.:censored:

The streets of Boston were filled with fans, but other than a few incidents related to overintoxication, there was nothing violent or untoward.

What gets me about the Vancouver rioting, in addition to agreeing completely with ila, is the stupidity of random violence. I mean, if you really want to express a violent reaction to the Canucks and the result of the series, why not storm Rogers Arena, drag Luongo out, and string him up from a tree in the park that has the statue of Lord Stanley? I'm not advocating such action, but at least it would make some sense in a hockey context.

I'm about to post a really touching article about real hockey fans in Vancouver that appeared in today's Boston Globe.

They should stick Luongo in front of a large net and have all the disgruntled fans shoot pucks at him. It's not like any of them would hit him anyhow, as he would let them all by.:censored:

This is a really nice article about true hockey fans, not the idiots who rioted in the streets of Vancouver last night. It becomes very clear that these people love hockey, especially when you read the very end.

VANCOUVER ? Jack Gill was beside himself.

Parker?s not coming,?? he said. ?He thinks there will be problems.??

Ryan Parker is a Boston Bruins fan, and he had watched the previous six Bruins-Canucks games in a little corner in a little bar called Dentry?s that Gill owns in a little Vancouver neighborhood called Point Grey.

This is not downtown. Think West Roxbury. Anybody wearing a Bruins jersey downtown, on Granville Street? They?re asking for it.

But here, hard against the University of British Columbia, with all the cafes and bookstores and yoga studios, it is almost genteel.

Almost.

There is nothing genteel about hockey in Vancouver.

It?s hard to be a Bruins fan anywhere in this town. For the first few games, Canucks fans tolerated Parker and the few other guys who had the nerve to wear the black and gold to Dentry?s. At first, they were a novelty. Then they became a nuisance.

?They sat in the corner and didn?t say much,?? Jen Perkins, the waitress, was saying. ?When the Bruins scored all those goals so fast in the first period of Game 6, they couldn?t help themselves. They were excited. Everybody else in here wasn?t.??

Gill was born in England to Indian parents. But he is, like every other immigrant in this immigrant town, a hockey nut. Last night, he was wearing a Canucks jersey.

?I hate wearing this thing,?? he said. ?I?m a Red Wings fan.??

It is a very weird thing, figuring out hockey loyalties here.

?Parker?s an awesome guy,?? Gill said. ?He?s a teacher. And he stays after school to talk to all the East Indian kids, the kids whose families are from Punjab, because he knows they have it tough when they go home and they?re not doing well in school. Gill handed me his cellphone, and this is what I said to 31-year-old Parker: ?Look pal, I know where you?re coming from, but I am the only guy from Boston in this joint right now. I need some backup.??

Twenty minutes later, Parker and his beautiful wife Katie walked in.

?You??? Geoff Wildbur said. ?Again??? During Game 6, Wildbur, a Michael Moore look-alike, was merciless in his mocking of Parker and the other handful of Boston fans who had the temerity to venture out to cheer on the Broons.

But last night Wildbur had a confession.

?I grew up in Toronto too,?? he said. ?I was a Maple Leafs fan.??

Wildbur and Parker looked at each other. You could almost hear the violin music. But the moment passed and then they just sneered at each other.

?What kills me,?? Wildbur said, ?is the Bruins have more Canadians than the Canucks do.??

He realized what he said and then he said, ?Don?t put that in the paper.??

When Patrice Bergeron scored the Bruins? first goal, Parker stood up, pumped his fist, and kissed his wife.

Wildbur ordered another beer.

Don Cherry, the former Bruins coach, came on the TV during the intermission, dressed in a jacket that looked like something you?d put on a picnic table. ?He?s the only good thing you guys in Boston ever gave hockey,?? Wildbur said.

When Brad Marchand scored the second goal, Wildbur ordered some nachos.

When Bergeron scored the third goal, Wildbur ordered me to be kind.

?This is ridiculous,?? he said. ?The Canucks have outplayed them in every facet of the game.??

Except scoring.

Parker was smiling and second-guessing himself about coming out in public with a Bruins jersey on in a place called Vancouver.

They came in slowly, one after another, period after period. Bruins fans, summoned by cellphone, by a power higher than them. As the minutes ticked down, and the Canucks fans folded their arms, the Bruins fans emerged, like dandelions after a spring rainfall.

When it was over, Parker stood up and kissed his wife deeply. He turned to Wildbur and shook his hand.

And when Zdeno Chara skated around with the Cup, Wildbur stood up and said, ?Give it to Thomas, give it to Thomas.?? When Tim Thomas got the Cup, Wildbur stood up and cheered, because, in the end he is a hockey fan, and he knew the guy who most deserved to hoist the Stanley Cup held it in his hands.

Losing is lousy. Losing to Tim Thomas is stomachable. Even in Vancouver.

The general consensus around the water cooler is the Luongo lost the series for Vancouver. At least Sedin (sorry, forgot which one) laid the blame at the feet of the forwards for not scoring. That would be the understatement of this last hockey season.

I think the general consensus is wrong. I think that, in addition to the Bruins fine play, the Canucks suffered from three main things: Luongo's inconsistent goaltending and the lack of scoring by the Vancouver forwards (the two things you mention, ila), and the fact that at critical moments the Canucks let their frustration get the better of them and simply did stupid, stupid things. And I don't mean biting and stuff like that, but rather things like going for a hit instead of the puck.

By the way, did everyone catch Mike Millbury referring to the "Sedin Sisters" as "Thelma and Louise"? :lol: I can't wait to ask him about the shit he's taken for that. He lives not far from me and I see him at least once a month at the grocery store.

The consensus I was referring to was when we were talking only about Vancouver's performance.

I just returned home from celebrating the Stanley Cup victory by the Boston Bruins with a million other people in the streets of Boston. I got to touch the Stanley Cup while it was held by Zdeno Chara! The only thing missing was Jen. ;)

FLYERS SHIP OUT RICHARDS AND CARTER IN TWO BLOCKBUSTER DEALS

Just one day before the National Hockey League's Entry Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers have made drastic changes to the face of their franchise.

In two separate deals made within a half hour of each other on Thursday, the club traded away captain Mike Richards and former 40-plus goal scorer Jeff Carter.

Richards was shipped to the Los Angeles Kings for forwards Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds and a second-round draft pick, while Carter was dealt to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Jakub Voracek and a first (8th overall) and third round draft pick.

Richards, who was named captain of the Flyers in 2008, is coming off a season where he scored 23 goals and 66 points.

The 26-year-old forward had a career high 31 goals in 2009-10 and was signed through the 2019-2020 season with a $5,750,000 cap hit.

Last season, Carter scored 36 goals and 66 points, he also had two points in six playoff games as the Flyers were eliminated by the Boston Bruins in the first round.

The 26-year-old forward was drafted by the Flyers 11th overall in the 2003 Entry Draft and had a career high 46 goals in the 2008-09 season.

Carter, who has 11-years remaining on contract that will have a cap hit of just over $5.272 million will give the Blue Jackets a much needed scorer to play along side their captain Rick Nash.

The 21-year-old Voracek recorded 14 goals and 32 assists in 80 games last season, after recording 16 goals and 34 assists in the 2009-10 season. He is currently a restricted free agent.

Voracek was drafted seventh overall by the Blue Jackets in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

The 22-year-old Simmonds was selected by the Kings in the second round of the 2007 Entry Draft and has played three seasons in the NHL, with a career high 16 goals in the 2009-10 season.

The 19-year-old Schenn was the Kings fifth-overall pick in the 2009 Entry Draft and played nine games in Los Angeles during the 2010-11 season.

By dealing Carter and Richards, the Flyers have opened up more than enough cap space to sign recently acquired goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, who is set to become a free agent on July 1.

The Flyers acquired the rights to the 30-year-old Bryzgalov, two weeks ago in a deal with the Phoenix Coyotes. Philadelphia shipped over a third-round draft pick in 2012, forward Matt Clackson and future considerations.

With Richards and Carter gone the Flyers should rename there team the Titanic cause they are going to sink fast in the standing next season

Tim Thomas won the Vezina Trophy. In reporting this in today's Boston Globe, the reporter closed the article with some sports humor from Jay Mohr, who emceed the trophy event. I particularly like the Lebron James reference.

Comedian Jay Mohr, emcee of the event, called out Vancouver residents for rioting in the wake of the Canucks’ Game 7 defeat to the Bruins.

“What an un-Canadian way to behave,’’ said Mohr.

Mohr added that Vancouver forward Alex Burrows, who in Game 1 of the Cup Final bit Patrice Bergeron’s right index finger, “is a very hungry person ... and the Boston Bruins are delicious.’’

Also, acknowledging the retirement of Bruins winger Mark Recchi, Mohr said, “Mark Recchi retired after the Finals ... unlike LeBron James, who retired right before the [NBA] Finals. Let’s pile on.’’

Perhaps this is a harbinger of good things to come, as everything in the universe realigns according to how it should be.

Well, by "harbinger" I meant a start. We can only hope that those southern teams will soon be moving north, where they rightly belong.

Next up Quebec City and Hamilton followed by Hartford. That takes care of where to move Carolina, Tampa Bay, and Florida. That leaves the decision of where to move Phoenix, which, by my guess, will be next spring after the taxpayers of Glendale realize that they will be on the hook each and every year for $30,000,000 plus to cover the Coyotes' losses.

The scuttlebutt here in New England is that there is no way Hartford will get an NHL team again. So, we shall see.

Personally, I'd like to see Halifax get one before Hartford.

I've heard that too. There is a lot of interest in Hartford to get another team, but from what I understand, from reading news reports, they have a long way to go before the NHL will consider Hartford again.

Halifax is an interesting idea. There have been occasional rumblings about a team going there, but nothing ever seems to happen about it.

Halifax has a substantial Bruins fan base, probably in part because of the strong overall connection between the city and Boston dating back to the famous Halifax Explosion in 1917, when the city was devastated. A French cargo ship loaded with explosives collided with a Norwegian ship in "The Narrows," a section of Halifax Harbor. The explosion killed about 2,000 people and injured 9,000, and destroyed lots and lots of buildings. Massachusetts sent a relief train, and beginning the year after and every year since, Nova Scotia has donated a fabulous Christmas Tree for the official City of Boston lighting ceremony. I've been to bars in Halifax during the hockey season and one feels a very strong Bruins presence.

Plus, it's less than two hours to fly between the two cities.

During this year's Stanley Cup finals, there were several articles about Halifax fans of the Bruins in the local press here, in part because Brad Marchand is from Halifax. Apparently, the Nova Scotia minister of transportation is a big Bruins fan, and told The Boston Globe that he is probably better known for that than as a member of the government. He recounted how he has a tradition at home of taking his false front teeth out whenever the Bruins are in the playoffs. Obviously, once he took them out this year, the Canucks were finished! ;)

SHARKS SHIP HEATLEY TO WILD FOR HAVLAT IN BLOCKBUSTER DEAL

The San Jose Sharks have traded forward Dany Heatley to the Minnesota Wild for forward Martin Havlat.

Heatley scored 28 goals and added 38 assists in 80 games for the Sharks last season while Havlat scored 22 goals and added 40 assists in 78 games for the Wild.

The Wild inherit the last three years remaining on Heatley's deal that will count as $7.5 million a year under the salary cap. However in real money, Heatley will make $8 million in 2011-12, $6 million in 2012-13 and $5 million in 2013-14.

Havlat has four years left remaining on his current contract, with an annual cap hit of $5 million.

Heatley, who has a modified no-trade, had to submit a list of 10 teams he wouldn't go to before July 1. Minnesota was not on that list.

"When players that we have targeted become available, you need to be able to react quickly and you also have to pay a price in order to acquire them," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said in a release. "When we made the Brent Burns trade, we knew we still needed to address our speed up front and we think the acquisition of Marty does that."

According to his agent Allan Walsh, Havlat agreed to waive his own no-trade clause earlier in the day to facilitate the move.

This is the second major deal between the teams over the past two weeks. The teams completed a draft-floor swap that sent Devin Setoguchi, former first-rounder Charlie Coyle and a 2011 first round draft pick to Minnesota for defenceman Brent Burns and a 2011 second rounder.

Heatley's tumultuous time in San Jose comes to an end after just two seasons. He demanded a trade from Ottawa following the 2008-09 season and was shipped to San Jose for Milan Michalek, Jonathan Cheechoo and a 2010 second round draft pick.

He has drawn criticism for his lack of production in the playoffs, scoring just five goals in 32 games over the past two post-seasons.

In 669 career NHL games, Heatley has scored 325 goals and chipped in 364 assists. His 26 goals last season tied for the second lowest single-season total of his career, equaling his rookie total in 2001-02 and better than only his 13 goals from 2003-04, in which he played only 31 games.

Havlat's 62 points from last season was good for the third-best total of his career, behind 2008-09 and 2003-04. He put up 77 and 68 points in those two campaigns, his last in Chicago and Ottawa respectively.

The Czech-born Havlat has scored 209 goals and added 303 helpers in 621 career NHL games between the three clubs.

Both players have a past with the Ottawa Senators. Heatley suited up for the team for four seasons between 2005 and 2009, while Havlat was drafted by Ottawa in the first round, 26th overall in 1999. The Sens would deal Havlat as part of a three-way trade in 2006.

Heatley was originally drafted second overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2000.

Does getting Burns and Havlat make them much better than they were? The problem with Havlat is that he is injury-prone and I don't see him as the player he used to be. I imagine that Heatley is a cancer in the locker room so that is probably why the Sharks were willing to get rid of him. Seto will be missed. He was young, fast, and a good guy who came up through the organization. Losing him, we needed some speed. We'll see if Havlat has it.

Everyone is injury prone by the time the playoffs roll around and the games matter. Thornton and Clowe had separated shoulders, Heatley a broken hand ... The list is long.

Heatley scored a hat trick on his first game in San Jose. People here liked him, and the players too. There were a gaggle of surprised well wishing tweets from them after the trade was announced. I don't think he "was a cancer in the locker room", because the Sharks are pretty successful. When they weren't, he was as much to blame as anyone, and he knew that. He wants to win, and he knows the game. In a less successful organization he might piss people off telling them how to do their jobs. I really don't know, but here in SJ, he was always a professional.

I'm never sure how things will shake out until they do. I don't think the Sharks are much weaker or stronger than last year. Maybe, at this point, I feel some optimism? They've got, maybe this year and next to win it, before age starts to take more of a toll. Tough to point to any weaknesses that glare. They should contend again. Last year we all said: the d is weak without Blake.

I would like to go on record that the Wild make me think of Christmas every time I see them. I imagine I'll laugh when I see Seto and Heatley in red and green. They'll get applause here in the tank when they return...

I read in the paper the other day that Winnipeg signed Andrew Ladd to a five year contract and that he will be the captain of the Jets. It looks like a good deal for Winnipeg.
