It is true that knowing how to skate is a definite plus for playing hockey. However, as Jen surely knows from the days of her beloved Broad Street Bullies, as long as you can get from one end of the rink to another with a high stick, ready to slash or body check, you don't need to be too good at the actual skating part. ;)

Yes, but can you trip head first into the U.S. goal in the Olympics? Then you would be tripping with Sidney Crosby.

No but I can be like Chris Pronger and fall down while trying to turn around(like the oaf did tonight!).;)

Finally, a decent win for them. Hopefully they'll play well against Russia.

No, Jen, I was just making a point about skating skills. But if you want to be compared to Dave Schultz, that's your perogative. The question from me, then, would be whether you would be beaten in a fight by a player 20 years older than you.

I'm thinking of the Tim Horton incident here.

Another question would be whether you can carry a tune. Have you ever heard Schultz's recording of "Penalty Box"? For a guy who holds the record sitting in the box, he ought to be a bit more familiar with "how it goes"!

Ah, memories ...

But really, in the immortal words of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, "I kid. I kid."

End of 1st period, Switzerland 0-0 USA. The Swiss has been a stubborn team during the Olympics.

Will Canada start with Luongo or Brodeur tonight against the Russians?

Brodeur's Dual Citizenship was obviously affecting his mind on Sunday night, he didn't know which team he was playing for.;)
But Luongo conceded 2 goals on only 23 shots against the weak Germans last night.

Mike Babcock already stated that Luongo would be in net against Russia. If he plays well enough tonight then I can't see anyone else playing in net for Canada the rest of the way.

If the Swiss can beat the US(perhaps if they got cocky after their win against Canada), then that would make our road to the gold a little easier.;)

Doesn't look like that's going to happen. The United States is now up 1-0, but there's still 15:53 left in the third period.

Interesting thought. Do you think he is a double agent? A mole? Doesn't the fact that he said that despite his U.S. citizenship he would always remain loyal to Hockey Canada count for anything?

I don't know the answers. I did hear that Team Canada offered him poutine before every game, and Team USA offered only bland old french fries.

ila 02-24-2010 04:59 PM

An interesting conversation at work today. One of the guys mentioned how piss poor and disinterested Brodeur is in the net. All bets are on Luongo for the rest of the Olympics.

Another interesting point, shadows. I mentioned to one of the guys at work today your comment about Pronger. I said I couldn't remember the name and before I could describe your post anymore the guy said "Pronger, he shouln't even be on the team." That's the general feeling around where I work. So you are not alone in your opinion, shadows.

The US team ended up winning 2-0(the second goal was an empty netter). Hiller was great for the Swiss, and he totally kept them in the game. A little more luck for the Swiss and they just might have pulled off the upset victory. Alas...

He's been pretty much reviled in all the conversations I've had as well. He is way too old to play on that level and it's not like he has a lot of games to atone for a game-costing gaffe like he would during the regular season in the NHL. They couldn't have chosen Mike Green over Sir Loafsalot?

I'm glad to see that my ire towards Mr. Fallsonface is shared by many fellow Canadians.;)

4-1 Canada after 1 period!:)

Two things of note. Luongo is playing well and the offense is alive for the second straight game. This bodes well if it continues.:)

I hope they keep it up. It's about time they showed their true potential.

Luongo always puts his full effort into every game that he plays.:respect:

I agree. I believe that the home crowd is pumping him up big time! You can't really fault Nabokov for the score(except for maybe the 4th goal) as the defense in front of him has been horrible! That was the knock against the Russians going into this game, and they are certainly proving it to be true.

Nash finally got a goal, Boyle has a goal and an assist(his play has picked up considerably from the first couple of games).

And as I am typing this....5-1 Canada!!!!!!:)

shadows 02-24-2010 07:30 PM

Holy crap!!!

6-1!!!!!!!!

shadows 02-24-2010 07:31 PM

Darn it! 6-2 now. Scoring like crazy right now!

shadows 02-24-2010 07:44 PM

Well, Luongo has given up 3 goals now, but I still think he's a better choice right now than Brodeur. Plus, the offensive firepower that Russia has is the best one of all the teams currently in the Olympics.

Thankfully the Canadian offense is a tad better in this game.

It is currently 7-3 Canada.

Looks like the USA were wrong to have a dig at Canada for only narrowly beating the Swiss last week. They're a tough team to beat with Hiller in the side.
And it's unlucky the Swiss drew the USA in the quarterfinals, I wonder how well they would've done against Russia, Sweden or Finland?

Even after Sunday's loss to the USA, it never looked like Canada couldn't still win the gold. They just needed to be more positive and hope Brodeur stopped making odd mistakes or go for Luongo. I can't see them losing a repeat match against USA.

BBC are going to show Canada-Russia from 2:30 AM GMT (in about 40 mins), I thought they'd give us highlights of the 1st period and then go live for the rest of the game. Wrong.

So I tried to avoid the score and then the man on the public address system at the short track skating said, "Canada 7, Russia 2." This was followed by a huge cheer from the crowd.

 When have you ever been able to clearly hear anything that anyone says over a public address system, especially when it's transmitted via the television?:p:frown:

So I gave up trying to avoid the score and knowing you'd post in-game updates here, I no longer needed to avoid the hockey thread.

I even watched the Czech Rep beat Latvia last night on the BBC, they aired it without, yes without, any commentary. No there wasn't a technical hitch. It was the oddest experience, watch live sport on TV with all the crowd noises but no one describing the game.

I've seen part of a game without any commentary, due to technical problems. The best description I can think of is it was somewhat eerie.

Perhaps they didn't have anyone that could speak either of the languages(for their "home" feed) of the two teams you mentioned, or they didn't have any english speaking commentators that knew who the heck was playing. It wouldn't be much fun to hear "And...somebody passes to...er, well someone else!" "And he makes the save!" "Wow! That goalie is great! I just wish I knew his name!".;)

:lol:You may jest, but on Sunday during the Canada-USA game the 2-man commentary team consisted of 1 Englishman and 1 North American (not sure if he was from north or south of the border), and I swear from the mid-point of the 2nd period the American's voice just vanished.

It sounded like he'd had enough of all the novice crap his English colleague was churning out, and he'd left the commentary box and gone to the bar.

For all I know it was probably the Englishman's first week describing hockey games.

If they use him for the final it will be a disaster.:(

The worst thing is when the crowd's cheers tell you something is going on, but off camera, and there is no one commentating to put you at ease.

I wish they'd taken the commentary from the Canadian broadcasters. It was a good fightback by Latvia.

I feel your pain, dauls. You should hear some north americans trying to describe a football (soccer) game. In short, the commentary is usually a disaster.

Jeez, nearly an entire page while I'm logged out, nearly a play-by-play of the Canada victory over Russia!

I think it's funny that Jon Miller and Joe Morgan have come up. One thing you have to give Joe Morgan credit for: there is no other baseball broadcaster I know of who routinely gets away with saying the same thing twice, again and again and again and again, over the course of a game. Jon Miller is a horse's ass, too, however, so they are made for each other!

Joe Morgan knows more about baseball than most of the other announcers put together, the problem is he talks down to everybody as if they know nothing. He is an absolute bore to listen to and I can't stand him. I almost never watch Sunday Night Baseball because of him. Jon Miller is a much better radio announcer than TV. He talks too much on TV.

Oh and Finland is ahead 1 to 0 with 5:30 to go. Great goal tending on both sides.
