Default foster/adopt children

ok so me and my gf have been given a unique opportunity recently.
as she is a mtf ts, we are unable to have our own children, and so down the track were always going to look at adopting a kid.

recently a family member had his 2 young girls taken from him and his partner and they have been in foster care since.
the government department looking after the kids is looking for foster parents to take the kids long term.. ie until they turn 18.
if you are family it is a lot easier to foster kids, as well as the obvious benefits of keeping the kids within the family.

has anyone got any experience with long term foster care (esp in australia), and especially with fostering family.

it wasnt something we were planning to do until down the track, but an opportunity like this is like gold for us, so we are seriously considering it.
