A New Movie....
Dear Folks and Gentle People,
Last night I had the pleasure of watching a relatively new (2008), seldom screened movie documentary. It was titled Prodigal Sons and was directed by transwoman Kimberly Reed. A film and magazine editor living in New York, Ms. Reed begins the film at her high school reunion in Billings, Montana. As she had not been home since transitioning, she was intent on capturing the various reactions of those present. One man, a former classmate, relating that he remembered Kimberly as Paul, the quarterback and star player on the football team, told her (that) "We have all gotten fat and bald but you, you have become a ....girl!".
The majority of the documentary relates, variously, the sibling rivalry, dysfunction, courage and love of Kimberly's remaining family of origin, with most of the emphasis shared between Kimberly herself and her adopted brother Marc, a mentally ill (traumatic brain injury) and highly labile man who only as an adult discovered that he is the only grandson of Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth. As I had the privilege of viewing Prodigal Sons at the San Francisco Frameline (GLBT) Film Festival, Ms. Reed was present and received a much deserved standing ovation when she took the stage after the showing. In a brief question and answer session she related that, to date, the documentary's relatively few screenings have been limited to small film festivals. However, she does hope for a wider distribution. She said the film has a dedicated website. I think she said it was [url]www.ProdigalSons.com. I have not visited the site and only include it as a probable source for a screening schedule, should forum members have an interest in seeing the film. I know that I certainly hope to see it again.
