Default Weather???

You have got to be kidding us. Talking about the weather is something most folks do when they ain't got nothing else to say.

And why in hell would anybody else be interested in what the normal daily weather is like where you are?

Sigh... it's still the mid 80s here. I want cold weather now! I love it when the 1st real cold front of the fall comes through. It looks very menacing. Like a UFO from Independence Day moving in and shoving other clouds out of the way. Suddenly you hear wind, and dust gets kicked up and then it blows past you. Then it's suddenly 20 degrees cooler.

Hi there.

I live in Montreal PQ Canada and in '98 we had an ice storm, the likes of which was never seen before and since, trees had limbs broken, not small ones but 5" - 6" diameter limbs, electric towers were destroyed, in some parts of Montreal and the suburbs power was out for about 2 weeks, in Canada we ARE used to winter but this was something else.

Oh I see, we want to talk about weather extremes. I worked one winter on the North Slope of Alaska. The scale of the thermometer on the Cookie Shack

went down to 30 degrees farenheit below zero and I didn't see no color on it from the time I got there in November untill the end of March when it finally

rose to 30 below. It is so cold there that it is considered a desert in the wintertime as there is no availible moisture; it has all frozen and fallen to the

ground. If the wind is blowing even a little bit, then any exposed skin will suffer frostbite in a short time. A thirty mph wind will do it in under a minute. Your breath freezes and sticks to your facemask, but you learn to leave it there as it is warmer than the air around you. Now I live in Wyoming where at

time the winter gets bad, but the thing on the North Slope is that it is damn cold all the time, every day, or should I say all night as where I was we didn't

see the sun there until April. 24 hours a day of dark. But, my god, the Northern Lights were beautiful. And when you are that far north, they are not on

the horizon, they are over head and span the heavens. I had seen pictures and film of them before, but they didn't begin to compare with actually

standing under the Northern Lights.

I wish... that would be awesome. The most extreme weather I've been in was Hurricane Ike. And yes, I know Ike was nothing compared to Katrina. Like I'd live in a city below sea level in Hurricane Alley lol.

Hi there.

Over the last few years, i have worked door to door and on 2 different winters there were days that hit -40 (-40C = -40F) with a bit of wind, 20mph your face feels it's being pelted with needles, winter's hell sometimes.

One morning, I was going to work, and it was so cold, 51 degrees below zero Celsius in Boston with the wind chill factor. Everytime I tried to use my cigarette lighter, the flame would freeze.

Where I live now, I've been able to go outside in the middle of June and enjoy a snowball fight.

Hi there.

Well with the wind chill,it was -60, and when we spoke it came out as bits of ice, we had to thaw them out to hear what was said.

Tracy! You're a Texan T-girl? That's hot! Do you own a ten gallon hat by any chance?:D

I remember in 2007, I was at Ft. Hood for 45 days and it rained nonstop for the whole time I was there. We had flash flood warnings and whatnot. Mucho lightning. Is that common? I mean like constant downpours and stuff.

Texas weather goes through different patterns, but when it storms it really storms.

Default Project Vortex Pictures

I signed up for a Twitter feed from "Project Vortex" this summer. Here are a few pictures. Check out the "armor plating" on the vehicle in the last photo!

Where I am from (Michigan), we don't get this kind of thing very often but I have driven the "I-44 and I-40" route ("old Route 66") through Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas many times. Must be scary to live there.

Considering that there is a Koala bear in the picture I would be willing to bet that the picture is from Australia, which has seen many wildfires in the last few years.

DSL, do you remember any of the "Blizzard of '78"? It came up through the Ohio Valley and dumped up to 24" of snow on parts of Indiana and Ohio. Western Michigan got hit hard but we didn't get too much snow in the Detroit area (maybe 9" -- but that's nothing for us). It then went on to New England--I think. Anyway, I was in grade school and we got out for a couple of days. :D Lots of fun--if you didn't have to drive!

Here are a few pictures from the Internet...

Default Stranded in a Blizzard

This thread has "drifted" (no pun intended) somewhat from the topic of this forum. Maybe we should start discussing who we would most like to be stranded in a blizzard with. I'll go first...

Default 78 blizzard

Hi
yes i was only 18 then we has 4 feet of snow under us! some areas got more then that. route 195 was a parking lot could not see my car it took me
2 days to dig it out! dont know where they put all that shit too.
we were without power for weeks that year after that it got sooo cold the
taunton river froze solid! blue hill weather station repoted winds at hurrican force.we had other powerful blizzerards after that one over the years but that
stom was the big one of all times the storm lasted for 3 days
2 to 3 inches per hour at times.
i remember it well...

Default Tornado Chasers

DSL, it sounds like you got it worse than us! Glad you finally got your car out. I remember helping my Dad dig his out--I thought it was fun, didn't understand why HE was pissed! (I was 7) I know that the winds were very strong--like 60-70mph or more. I am not sure of this, but I think sometime during the storm the lowest pressure ever recorded in North America occurred (non-hurricane related of course).

Enjoy the storm chasing pictures. These guys are a bunch of crazy M*****F******! I love it!

Default Indiana Tornado

While proud to be from Michigan, I actually lived in Indiana for a while and got my undergrad (Industrial Management) from Purdue in West Lafayette. If you have ever been there, you know that it is in the "middle of nowhere" and the surrounding area is flat and ripe for tornadic activity. Kind of "tornado alley lite."

:D I live in deep South Texas and I have definitely been through many "blue northers"
The weather can be sunny and 95 degrees, and then a strong northern barrels through and it can be in the 30's in a matter of minutes/hours!

(the summers are so long and hot here, that when the first real cold front does come through, I always have a party to celebrate!)

Texas does have great thunderstorms and big, open vistas to watch the weather.
I lived in the Pacific Northwest for a several years and the three things I really missed were barbeque, real Tex-Mex and thunderstorms!

I do miss the change of seasons/foliage color that DSL mentions though...

Most extreme? Been through blizzards, several hurricanes, have seen three tornados, many hailstorms, and was pretty close to the Jarrel, Tx tornado which was an F5. (I lived in Austin) The sky turned an eerie green color.

Coolest? Northern Lights for sure. Love sunsets too.
Current weather: Dark (its night) Tomorrow: hot! (96/75) muggy, sunny, very green, scattered puffy clouds...

Well just wondering what type of season you like
me i like fall is the best for me not too hot not too
cold just in between. colorful leaves changing
watching them fall like snow on the ground, and late fall too
hunting season cold fresh air where you can see the frost coming from your
mouth.

We had a severe thunderstorm come thru this morning a heavy band of
rain an inch per hour in some areas thunder lighting we even lost power
in a lot of counties too for a couple of hours.and some counties are still
without power here we got ours back this afternoon
it was sort of a late season thunderstorm for us winds blowing up to
50 MPH.

Default More Indiana Fun

We don't get as many tornades as say Texas, Oklahoma, or Kansas. But things can get interesting. In 2002, we had a pretty bad tornado that caused a lot of damage through central Indiana. I remember it well. My "ex" and I lived in Hendricks county (near I-70 see map) and I was at home that day working on my computer--our house was on a hill and my office windows faced South. While we were not directly hit, I had a great "view" as the storm moved in. Solid black--it looked like "smoke" over the trees. She worked as a nurse at an Indianapolis hospital and they had to take patients into the halls as the tornado struck downtown. A few of our large buildings had windows blown out and some of our campus buildings were hit as well and students in the dorms were evacuated.

Here is a link to pictures of the damage and a map of its path:

These are not that tornado but are representative of what we get here. The black sky is from July 8, 2003 another day to remember. One touched down near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Smile A Nicer View of Indiana

Thought I'd share some pictures of Brown County in Southern Indiana. This time of year it is a lot of fun to visit and the scenery is beautiful. Indiana University is right next door in Bloomington and everything is just an hours drive from Indy. Great places to ride or drive. Or just relax!

Default Blizzard warning

Well our weather is rapidly deteriorating our first nor-easter of the season
we are under a winter storm warning and a blizzard warning! as well.
temps are 30 outside winds are 15 to 20 mph it has just started coming down now at the rate of 2 inches per hour at times 3 inches per hour. winds will
gust to 60 mph! leaving a windchill of 20 below zero!! i am fro southern Massachusetts the Epic Center of this block buster blizzard.
snowfall totals will be in the range of 15 to 25 inches!! isolated spots will
see over 30 inches! this will be the storm that will go down in the record books!. but still will not beat the blizzard of 1978 we got nailed with 38 inches that year nearly 4 feet.
