Porn was pretty much underground for decades. Guys used to have to have make do with pin-up girls and Super 8 films before centerfolds and VHS tapes. Now we have tons of options for adult entertainment!
The "damsel in distress"theme has always been pretty common male fantasy I think and the artwork for pulp magazines and comics is testament to that. Personally I grew up reading comic books and it seemed like all the superheroines were beautiful with skin tight and reavealing costumes showing off their assets.
