There are no mermaids in Homer's Odyssey, the Ulysses tale to which you refer. Some mythologists contend that the Sirens are mermaids, but there is nothing in Homer's writing to support that statement, including no specific physical descriptors.
But since Siren's are man-eating beasts in the form of women, perhaps you just didn't want to use their proper name. Personally, I have no problem with it, since the thought of being "eaten" by Andre is actually quite arousing.
