Personally I've never run into a site that was impossible to unsubscribe from (just a good luck perhaps).

Frankly, no one should have any troubles so long as they take the three most obvious steps to protect themselves...

1) Always remember to register at any online site with a side email account that you've created JUST for joining online clubs and things. Hell, take your pick: Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, Google -- it's impossible these days to NOT get an instant free email account somewhere. Just be smart enough to NEVER use your actual private and personal email (that you use for family and friends), so that account won't get passed along without your knowledge, at which point you'll be spammed to death. Plus, if you join any site using a side email...and you quit the site, but for some reason they keep sending you emails...you can then block them in your spam blocker or you can just close/dump the free email account completely. End of story.

2) Obviously people should also know to NEVER use their full real name -- well, unless it's at a place like Facebook where the whole point is that you WANT to be easily found. At the same time, to protect your identity, also remember to "break things up" and not use the exact same nickname everywhere you join -- otherwise you do run the risk of someone accidentally noticing your same handle in all sorts of places, and then piecing things about you together.

3) And lastly, in today's internet age filled with phishing schemes and whatnot, to be financially safe either get a side debit card that you can use for JUST online shopping or joining clubs/pay sites. That way if you ever run into trouble, you can just cancel the card. No account, end of billing troubles. Or two, if you do sign up for something using one of your primary credit cards, make sure you keep a copy of the email or notice cancelling a membership, then just call your credit card company and have them block that site or their billing agency. Again, end of worries since the bank will now run blocker for you.
