Well, if she wears a thong, you could always ask her if it's comfortable. If she says yes, tell her you'd like to try it yourself, since traditional men's underwear is pretty uncomfortable. If she protests, tell her it can be a secret between the two of you.
And if you want to and she throws a fit, I suggest you're with the wrong girlfriend. That's a harbinger of bigger problems.
