I think this way!
I had never considered myself as gay. I always considered myself bi, leaning more towards femininity. Though I more closely identify as pan-sexual.
So really... Sexual orientation and gender identity have nothing to do with each other.

They were born of the wrong gender and have never felt comfortable in their natural bodies, so they sought out psychiatric help and got on to prescription hormone tablets (testosterone or estrogen, depending on their biological/physical gender, and what their mental/emotional/sexual gender is).

Not only this, but women are usually bi-sexual, just leaning towards either men or women as a preference, and most likely stay as women because they are attracted to femininity, so they believe that their partner would be as well, whereas a transsexual knows that they are unattractive physically to the type of person they are trying to attract, so they change themselves to suit who they feel they really are. Women are usually more open-minded and accepting of different shapes and forms, and are somewhat more pansexual than men (Pansexual meaning they choose their partners to aesthetic attraction and romantic feelings, rather than physical attributes).

Oh and in case you hadn't guessed by now, I voted that it was a matter of gender identity issue

Hope this has shed some light on the subject at hand, and sorry about the wall of text that slapped you in the face :P
Uhem... It's Gender Identity Dysphoria. It's not a mental disorder. It's a birth defect.

And I never felt that I should transition because I was unattractive to people I was trying to attract. I transitioned because I was not comfortable in the body I was born it.
I have had sexual experiences with men before I transitioned, but did not enjoy it because they were attracted to the male figure they had before them. I never liked being treated as a man!

Yes... I myself started out as identifying as a bisexual cross dresser. But I never felt that was the right way for me to go. I didn't learn of transsexualism till I was 26, so it took me awhile to find my true self.

Yes... In fact in the late '90s there was a study that found that all of the transsexual brains in the study (cadavers), had all the genetic similarities to cis females brains.
And no not all of the transsexuals in the study had ever undergone HRT.

Two people actually chose this option? I have one question for them. Why the fuck are/were you even at this site then?
Those are called trolls... they like to get under peoples skin. For one reason or another.
