Hello fellow hockey fans!

Here is the official thread of hockey in the 2010-2011 season. It does not have to be NHL hockey, it can be anything from the international scene to the minors. Anything goes!

I cannot wait for it to start. I honestly feel that the Leafs will be a much improved team over last season(how can they not?) and it will be fun to watch. I will admit that I am worried about their defensive shortcomings, but I feel that their trade to get Versteeq will help out the offensive woes they had last season. Versteeq has already helped out Kessel, who has been excellent in preseason.

So come on in, hockey fans! Let me know who you are rooting for and how you (honestly) think they will do this season!

Go Leafs GOOOOOOO!!!!:)

Good luck to you and your team, whoever they are! Let's see some good games and have some epic moments!

In the off-season, I don't think they addressed their weaknesses, but they were such small weaknesses. There could still be some trades to come, but if we were playing poker, I'd stand with these cards.

Sharks for the Cup ! Our season starts in Stockholm! Cool!

The rivalry between Montreal and Boston is going to be a little more intense this season as both teams made some good off-season moves.

Montreal made the right choice picking Gionta as the Captain. He's a natural on-ice leader. Montreal made the wrong choice when they let Halak go. Price is a fantastic goalie, but he's not consistent enough to carry the team for a whole season, whereas Halak is a fantastic goalie and he's consistent.

Predictions for the seasons

Montreal will make it into the playoffs, but lose to Boston.

Chicago is still an unknown quantity right now, but they will still go far this season.

Vancouver will make to the finals although they may not win the cup.

Phoenix will lose its team. YEAH!!

I'm stoked and ready! I caught a Vancouver pre-season game the other night. I can't wait for "Hockey Night in Canada" in the coming months. I think most people know where I stand...I'm a fan of Montreal and Boston. I like it when either team does well, but in a head-to-head matchup between the two I'd have to root for Montreal.

I don't keep up with the news during the offseason...So ila's post informed me about the decision regarding goalies. That's sad...I really liked Halak. I don't know if Montreal will be as strong without him.

I also like the buzz surrounding Vancouver this year...I expect they'll go deep.

But to where?

To Hamilton or Winnipeg? Maybe Milwaukee or Portland or Seattle. Or somewhere non-traditional like Houston or Las Vegas!

My bet is on Winnipeg. Bettman doesn't like Hamilton and Jim Balsillie. The board of governors who at one time thought Balsillie was the greatest thing since sliced bread have decided to be sycophants to Bettman, therefore Hamilton will never get a team. Toronto and Buffalo both have vetoes on Hamilton and neither team will approve a Hamilton franchise. It's too bad because hockey would be a big draw in Hamilton and they deserve a team.

I shuddered when I read your remark about Houston or Las Vegas. That would be a nightmare to a true hockey fan. It's bad enough that Dallas has an NHL team; Houston would be a horror. I wouldn't be too upset if Utah got a hockey team. At least they have snow and it gets cold there.

You are most welcome, GRH, for the information regarding goalies. Halak I'm sure will be missed.

A little bit more information for you regarding Gionta. He is from New York (Rochester I think, but I could be wrong) and only the second American to be Captain of Montreal. The other one was Chelios.

I'm traveling with less time than usual for logging on, but wanted to make a few quick remarks. I will write a more extensive pre-season assessment later this week.

I am excited for my Bruins having signed Tyler Seguin, who already is making an impact beyond his years. The Bruins have some serious work to do to atone for their epic collapse against the Flyers in last season's playoffs. We shall see. Boston always looks good before the season begins.

More to come, including some views of other teams ...

Houston/Las Vegas - Well with Bettman you never know.

Does Winnipeg have the financial strength to get the franchise?

Toronto and Buffalo should show some balls and accept a bit of on and off ice competition from Hamilton. Local rivalry is good for sport.

Houston/Las Vegas - Well with Bettman you never know.

This is so true and all so very possible with Bettman making the decisions; not to mention a true hockey fan's nightmare.

Does Winnipeg have the financial strength to get the franchise?

Reports are that both Winnipeg and Quebec City have the financial strength to keep a franchise. Both cities have about the same population draw and hockey is almost a religion in both areas. The only difference is that Winnipeg has a new arena and Quebec City wants to build a new arena.

Toronto and Buffalo should show some balls and accept a bit of on and off ice competition from Hamilton. Local rivalry is good for sport.

Yes both teams should allow competition from Hamilton. Their is a huge fan base around the Hamilton area and these fans would rather cheer for a team than split their loyalties between Toronto and Buffalo. I have no doubt that Shadows would agree with me on this.

Only a few hours to go before face off between my Bruins and the Coyotes in Prague. I think it's a great idea the NHL had to have a couple of games in Europe. Had I not already had tickets for my annual weeklong trip to the San Francisco Bay Area with the first weekend of October in the middle (for the big music festival in Golden Gate Park), I would have figured out a way to go to Prague, but the combination would've meant flying San Fran to the Czech Republic and missing even more school at the beginning of the semester!

Anyhow, on to a great season, I hope, not only for the Bruins but for all the hockey fans here on the Forum. I look forward to picking up our discussion where it left off in the Spring.

Ugh! Two periods gone and the Bruins trail 4-0. They're playing the way they did in the last games of last season, when they lost to the Flyers after being up 3-0 in the playoff series. Breakaways by the Coyotes have killed them. Lethargy by the Bruins have killed them. Yes, it's early in the season, but if this doesn't change soon the season will soon be all but over.

I've had to change my mindset during the break by posting some old pictures of beautiful Tara Emory! She lives in Boston, and that's as much of a connection as I can take back to the Bruins (at least for a few minutes).

smc
10-09-2010, 01:19 PM
Well, Nathan Horton has scored 2 goals for Boston in the first 10 minutes of period 3. Boston is back in the game. Clearly, the Bruins got whatever message Claude Julien gave them during the break!

Ah, but as I write the Bruins will now have to kill a penalty to keep it a 2-goal game!

On Saturday the last Devils update I heard was the score at the end of the 1st period: Devils lead 2-1.

But conceding straight 6 goals for a humiliating 7-2 defeat - at least ESPN-UK weren't showing the game yesterday.

I hope the Devils are just having a bit of a rusty start to the season.

For my Maple Leaf fan friends on this site, from the Boston Globe (October 11, 2010):

The Maple Leafs Saturday improved to 2-0 with ex-Bruin Phil Kessel contributing his second goal of the season. If they make it 3-0, Cup-starved Leafs fans (1967 and counting) might have to consider pulling their kids out of school for the full academic season, lock the doors, and gather ‘round the computer to stream nhl.com 24/7.

The Maple Leafs are now 4-0 to start the season! I will admit that I did not see this great start coming at all. They beat the New York Rangers 4-3 in Overtime. Phil Kessel had 2 goals and an assist in the victory. Giguere was excellent in net. I am so glad the Leafs picked him up last year.:)

It sounds like the Rangers lost both Gaborik and Drury to injuries. I am not sure how severe their injuries are.

Here are the other finals from October 15th:

1. Montreal beat Buffalo 2-1. Price played well in this game, although he wasn't overly tested by a rather weak Buffalo offense. If he continues to play like he has been the past couple of games, then the Habs should be fine and may not miss Halak overly much.

2. Colorado beat New Jersey 3-2. The Devils peppered Anderson with 43 shots, and he showed the same kind of play he did against the Sharks last year in the playoffs.

3. Pittsburgh beat the Islanders 3-2 in Overtime. Malkin and Crosby were limited to 1 assist apiece, and that is something they need to change if the Penguins want to do well this season. They have both been slow getting out of the gate, and Marc Andre-Fleury has been average at best(he was not in net this evening).

4. Chicago beat Columbus 5-2. Marian Hossa had a goal and an assist in the victory(he now has 4 goals and 4 assists). Now that he is fully healthy, it looks like he is going to be worth it for the Blackhawks.

The other two games are ongoing. Atlanta has a 1-0 lead over Anaheim in the first period, and Vancouver vs LA starts later.

It's the much anticipated return of shadows' famous NHL round-up.
Clearly boosted by the Leafs' 4-0-0 start.

Again it looks like the Devils are competing and also outshooting their opponents, but they've forgotten how to find the back of the net.:frown:

Well it looks like prediction #4 may not happen this season. There is a reported buyer for Phoenix. If that is the case the taxpayers of Glendale are going to end up with a whopping bill.

It's good to see that Montreal is off to a good start this season. They can't expect Price to carry the team for the season though. The offence is going to have to play better hockey and start scoring more.

So they are basically putting a bandaid on top of their sucking chest wound? That just means that they are putting off the inevitable.

It may not happen for a couple of years, but hockey is NOT a viable market in Glendale.

The Coyotes are off to a crappy start so far, with a 1-2-1 record. They've never had great attendance, but a slow start will really make them stay away in droves.

You could be right, Jennifer. I haven't watched very many clips of Brodeur this year, and have mainly just read articles online. He is getting older, and with a poor defense in front of him, it may show more than it would have in the "glory years" of the Devil's defense.

Jen, my experience is that there's great hockey coverage in five of the NHL Original Six cities: Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Montreal, and Toronto (New York, not so much).

National coverage sucks, because hockey always was a regional sport (until they let teams exist in places that we've already discussed ad infinitum last year, where ice doesn't form naturally!).

They're based in Toronto, and like them or not, the Leafs are a huge market. It makes sense that they would focus on them at tsn.ca. I know that sportsnet the television channel has a feed for the east and west coasts respectively, so that helps the exposure for the western teams(for NHL hockey) and the east coast for Junior hockey.

The Oilers are a really young team, so it is to be expected that they are struggling a tad. I think as the season goes on they will play better. Will they make the playoffs this year? Not likely, but that doesn't mean to say that they will stink it up.

Now, without any malice(especially since my pal dauls is a fan of them) I can say that the New Jersey Devils are in a heap of trouble. Wow!

1. Montreal lost 3-0 to Columbus.

2. San Jose lost 1-0 to Minnesota. San Jose outshot Minny 36-16 but could not find the back of the net.

3. Vancouver nearly coughed up a 3-0 lead(it was 3-3 at one point) before they scored at 10:53 of the third period to take a 4-3 lead and gain a victory.

Here are some scores from the November 3rd games:

1. Washington beat Toronto 5-4 in the shootout. The only good things about this game is that Toronto finally scored some goals and at least got a point. The bad thing is that they gave up more goals than they scored. Damn it!

2. New Jersey beat Chicago 5-3. I seriously doubt that there will be too many people saying that this year's Chicago team is anywhere as good as last year's. They just don't seem to have that "edge". That being said, this was a good win for the Devils, but it may have come at a cost.
Brodeur left the game in the second period with a bruised elbow(if you'll recall, he injured his elbow last year and missed many games due to it). So far the X-Rays have come back negative so it may not be a serious injury.

3. Boston beat Buffalo 5-2. And the Bruins keep on rolling. According to some of the comments that I've read, the Bruins didn't play as well as they could have. Tim Thomas finally gave up a goal, his first in almost 3 full games!

Devils (4-9-1) move up to 13th in the Eastern Conference - that's the highest we've been all season. ;)

Fortunately the puck only hit Brodeur's funny bone and gave him a little difficulty holding his stick - he may miss Friday's game against the Rangers, but should be back soon after that.

I wonder how the Devils will get by without Zach Parise (had knee surgery on Tuesday), who will be out for up to three months. :(

Unfortunately, here is some bad news. The Flyers lost 3-2 to Washington in overtime today. The refs called a penalty in overtime to allow Washington to score the game winner. Earlier in the game they called a 4-minute double minor to Pronger for a high-stick(which sounds like it was called for), so Philly was playing short-handed for quite a while during the last parts of the game.

Hopefully it will cheer you up that Edmonton beat Chicago 2-1. Chicago is not even a shadow of the team that it was last season. If they continue to play like this they won't be repeating champs, that is for sure!

Another loss for the Devils - still winless at home (0-5-2).

We conceded two goals in 13 seconds. We gave up 1-0, 3-2 and 4-3 leads against the Sabres.

The Devils finally made it to 10pts - the last team to do so.

We are also last in goals scored - only 29 in 16 games.

And... have you seen the clip of Kovalchuk losing the puck as he blew his chance in the shootout gainst the Sabres? It's what they call a 'schoolboy error'. Not what you expect from the '$100M man'. I can't take another 15 years of this.

Did you see the Habs / Bruins game? It's hard to say that Montreal "beat" Boston. It would be more accurate to say that two teams arrived under the guise of playing a hockey game, and that as both teams proved they weren't really there, one team ended up being a little bit more "there" than the other team.

If I had gone to the Garden for that one, I would've been demanding my money back -- even if the roles had been reversed!

And Wednesday night's boo-boy Ilya Kovalchuk scored the OT winner and left the ice to cheers from the home crowd.

I still say there shouldn't be overtime during regular season games. There was no overtime in the original NHL and it was only brought in to attract hockey fans in nontraditional markets.

shadows seems to be missing so I'll give a recap of the scores for last night (for the games that I care about :) )

Montreal thrashed Carolina 7 - 2.

Ottawa beat Boston 2 - 0. What's happening with the Bruins lately, smc. Have they forgotten that there is a full season to be played?

Bad news for shadows as his Leafs went down to defeat against Vancouver 5 - 3. It's time to jump aboard the Canadiens bandwagon, shadows, or maybe the Hamilton Bulldogs.

As Jen has already posted, Philadelphia won last night. They beat Florida 5 - 2.

I remember "Lucky Luke" from when he played for the Leafs. No parent should ever have to go through this. Rest in peace, Daron.:(

Article is from tsn.ca:

TEENAGE DAUGHTER OF SENATORS' ASSISTANT RICHARDSON DIES

OTTAWA -- The teenage daughter of Ottawa Senators assistant coach Luke Richardson has died.

Daron Richardson, 14, was rushed to hospital Friday, the team said in a statement Saturday.

"There was an accident at their home (Friday) and Daron tried to take her life by hanging," the statement read. "Her mother found her in the basement, and Daron was rushed to the hospital by ambulance where she remained in critical condition in ICU until she succumbed to her injuries."

Luke Richardson played 21 seasons in the NHL with Toronto, Edmonton, Philadelphia, Columbus, Tampa Bay and Ottawa.

He retired in 2008, finishing with 35 goals and 166 assists in 1,417 games.

He was not with the team when it shut out the Bruins 2-0 in Boston on Saturday night. Asked about Richardson, coach Cory Clouston choked back tears and walked away.

"It's a difficult time," forward Chris Kelly said after the game in Boston. "It puts things into perspective. We just play a game, and things like that ... I don't know."

Goalie Brian Elliott said the team found out before the morning skate that Daron Richardson had been taken to the hospital.

"It's just a bad situation," he said. "Our thoughts are prayers are with him. You never want that to happen to anybody. We just ... our thoughts are behind the family."

And it looks like the bad news continues for Markov of the Montreal Canadiens. Again, from tsn.ca.

REPORT: MARKOV TO MISS UP TO 3 MONTHS WITH KNEE INJURY

The Montreal Canadiens might have to get used to playing without defenceman Andrei Markov for quite some time.

Citing unconfirmed reports, the Montreal Gazette speculates that Markov could be out of the Canadiens lineup for up to three months after suffering an injury to his surgically repaired knee during Saturday's blowout victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

The 31-year old Russian blueliner suffered the injury when he collided knee-on-knee with Hurricanes' captain Eric Staal late in the third period. Markov punched the boards in frustration and had to be helped off the ice by teammates. He was unable to put any weight on his leg as he headed to the dressing room.

He was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Sunday to determine the extent of the injury.

It would be a devastating loss for the Canadiens who have been playing their best hockey of the season since Markov returned to the lineup on October 30th. In seven games so far this season Markov has a goal and two assists.

Man, that guy has had some seriously bad luck with his knees in the past few seasons.

That game was amazing from an offensive standpoint, and Steve Stamkos(a good Canadian kid!) got himself 3 goals and 2 assists(leads the NHL now with 19 goals and 15 assists for 34 points...all in only 19 games!) led the way! However, from a defensive/goaltending standpoint it was a horrible game!

I remember Patty from his days as the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. They really should have voted him into the Hall of Fame this year(or allowed him in through special circumstances as he is a shoe-in to be inducted next year) while he was still alive. I liked him. He was a good coach and a good person. Rest In Peace, Pat.:(:(:(

Here is an article on his passing, from cancer, on tsn.ca.

FORMER NHL COACH PAT BURNS DIES OF CANCER AT THE AGE OF 58

Pat Burns, who enjoyed instant success wherever he coached and who capped his tumultuous career by guiding the New Jersey Devils to Stanley Cup glory in 2003, has died of cancer. He was 58.

Burns died Friday in Sherbrooke, Que.

The former NHL coach battled cancer of the colon and the liver in 2004 and 2005 and hoped he had beaten the disease, but in January 2009 doctors found it had spread to his lungs.

The third time, he initially opted to forgo any further treatment, but then decided to go with chemotherapy to try to extend his life as long as possible.

"Just as they will remember Pat for his success as a coach, hockey fans also will remember his humour, his honesty, his humanity and his courage," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. "As it mourns the loss of an outstanding contributor to the game, the National Hockey League sends heartfelt condolences to Pat's family and friends."

Burns remained as a consultant to the Devils for some time after being diagnosed with the third cancer. And, even though his voice had weakened, he did some morning hockey commentaries on CKAC, a French-language Montreal radio station.

Burns was the only coach to win the Adams Trophy as the NHL's top bench boss with three different teams -- Montreal in 1989, Toronto in 1993 and Boston in 1998.

His last official public appearance was in early October, when he attended the groundbreaking ceremony for an arena to be named in his honour in Stanstead, Que.

The wise-cracking Burns couldn't resist a jab at the media, some of whom had reported a few weeks earlier that he had died.

"I'm not dead yet," he told journalists in a hushed tone, his frail body and sunken cheeks showing the physical toll the lengthy battle had taken.

"I'm still alive."

After Burns admitted at his previous public outing last March he likely wouldn't live another year, an online petition gathered thousands of names urging that he be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

New Jersey general manager Lou Lamoriello said categorically Burns would be inducted "in the very near future," but when 2010 inductees were announced his name was not among them.

"Pat was a close friend to us all, while dedicating his life to his family and to the game of hockey," Lamoriello said in a statement. "Today, the hockey world has lost a great friend and ambassador."

It was while coaching the Devils that Burns discovered something was wrong in the weeks leading up to the 2004 NHL playoffs. He announced the day after the Devils were eliminated that he'd been diagnosed with colon cancer.

"For those who know me well, I've never backed down from any fight, and I'm not going to back down from this one," he said after finding out he was sick.

He received hundreds of cards and emails from well-wishers, but it was a tough year: Burns' wife, Line, also underwent surgery in 2004, and their Florida home was damaged by a hurricane.

He let Lamoriello know the team should replace him, and Larry Robinson was named head coach.

Then, hopeful he'd kicked the dreaded disease, the second body blow was delivered -- liver cancer. That forced him to have surgery and retreat to his lakeside home in New Hampshire to recuperate and undergo yet more chemotherapy in Boston.

He was speaking enthusiastically of returning to work when cancer struck a third time. It was then he admitted the end was near.

A big, robust man in his heyday, Burns was already thin and frail as he travelled last March from his home near Tampa, Fla., to southeastern Quebec for the announcement that the Pat Burns Arena would be built at Stanstead College and open in 2011.

"I probably won't see the project to the end, but let's hope I'm looking down on it and see a young Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux" skating on the rink, he said at a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

"I know my life is nearing its end and I accept that.

"As for my career, I always said to my kids, 'you don't cry because it's over, you're happy because it happened.' That's the main thing. I'm happy it happened."

He was a sharp dresser and, away from the rink, he got around. He once sat in with a band and played guitar, he wheeled around on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and he moored a speedboat at a lake north of Toronto.

Burns was the youngest of six children born into a working-class family in the St-Henri district near the old Montreal Forum. His father died when he was a boy and he moved with his mother and stepfather to Gatineau, Que.

Inspired by his cousin Robin Burns, a former NHL player who would act as his agent during his coaching career, he played hockey but wasn't good enough to make it to the NHL.

So, he became a police officer and began coaching in minor hockey. He worked his way up in both endeavours. He became a detective in Gatineau and head coach of the local major junior team, which was then called the Hull Olympiques.

----End of Part 1----

shadows
11-20-2010, 06:27 AM
----Part 2----

He took the Olympiques to the 1986 Memorial Cup final and was an assistant coach of Canada's junior team at the world tournament in Piestany in what was then Czechoslovakia.

Faced with choosing between policing and coaching, Burns chose hockey at the urging of the new owner of the Hull team -- none other than Gretzky.

"I flew to Edmonton to see Wayne about it," Burns recalled in Dick Irvin's book, "Behind The Bench."

"He said, 'Look, you're gonna coach in the NHL one day.'

"I sort of laughed and said, 'Yeah, sure. Easy for you to say.' He says, 'I'm telling you, you're a good coach and someday you'll be in the NHL. So why don't you quit the police force? I'll give you the same salary you're getting as a policeman. Even a bit more if you want. Stay on for three years and I guarantee you someday you'll be in the NHL. You're a good coach.'

"So, I resigned from the police force and signed to work full-time for Wayne."

He was on his way.

Burns moved up to the Montreal Canadiens' AHL farm team in Sherbrooke, Que., and after only one year in the pro ranks was promoted to the big club.

"Six years before, I had bought scalpers' tickets to watch the Canadiens play at the Forum," recalled Burns. "The first time I walked into the dressing room when the players were there, I was shaking."

He soon gained the confidence he needed to succeed at the big-league level and he led the Canadiens to the championship series in his first season in 1988-89, losing the Stanley Cup final to the Calgary Flames. He won more games than any other coach in the NHL (174-104-42) during the four-year span spent behind their bench.

Burns eventually got fed up with being under the microscope in the hockey-mad city.

"In Montreal, the rap was I couldn't handle superstars, which was not true," he told Irvin. "The fans got impatient, I think the media got impatient, and I got impatient with the media. It was time for me to go."

He jumped at the chance to coach Toronto when then-general manager Cliff Fletcher offered him the job, and he took the Maple Leafs to conference finals in 1992 and 1993. He was fired after his fourth season but he'd left an indelible impression.

"Pat forged a tremendous bond, not only with a very good veteran team in Toronto, but also with Leafs fans everywhere," Fletcher, the Leafs' senior advisor, said in statement. "He commanded respect from the players and the team quickly had great success while taking on the identity of the head coach.

"The Leafs' rise at the time was a testament to Pat's strength, toughness and determination. Hiring him 18 years ago was easily my best decision in hockey, and we developed a great friendship that I will always treasure. Pat will be greatly missed."

Burns knew he wouldn't coach the Leafs forever.

"I think after you're four or five years in the same town, even if you have a lot of success, and I had a lot of success in Montreal, I think it's time to move on -- unless you win the Stanley Cup every year," he told Irvin.

After a year on the sidelines, he returned to the NHL with Boston. Eight games into his fourth season there, he was fired.

He often left the impression that he felt the world was against him, and had a rage to strive for success against all odds. His emotional style was a trademark.

He sometimes came across as being gruff or surly, mainly because he would not take guff from anybody, and he often spiked his comments with dark humour.

In talking about the amount of physical play in the Boston-Buffalo playoff series in 1999, he offered, "If this is World War Three, then what's going on in that other series (Colorado-Detroit) is the end of the world."

He'd yell at referees, hoping to stir up his players to greater efforts. Asked his view of the ramifications of criticizing NHL referees, he once suggested, "You either get suspended, fined or have to give your first-born child to the league."

Burns did some radio and television work before Lamoriello called in the summer of 2002. Once again, he was front and centre with an NHL team.

"I owe a lot to Lou," Burns would recall. "I was out of the game for two years and I read a lot of articles saying I was done and I wasn't the style of coach people wanted. He believed in me."

Burns rewarded Lamoriello's faith in him by using a tight-checking style that helped the Devils win the Stanley Cup. He was always defensive about his reputation as a defence-first coach but it was a way to win -- and he took it.

"I coach hard work," he once said.

And he loved to coach.

Feeling better again, he put the word out that he was ready to get back behind the bench, and was named to the coaching staff of the Canadian team for the 2008 IIHF World Championships in Halifax and Quebec City. He also attended Patrick Roy's jersey retirement ceremony at the Bell Centre in the 2008-09 season at the request of his former star goaltender.

After it was reported he had been diagnosed with cancer for a third time, he asked for no one to pity him and kept up as many of his daily activities as possible, including scouting games in Tampa Bay near his home.

"I miss the practice times; I miss the morning skates," Burns told the CBC. "There was something about before a hockey game -- that electricity that existed -- that I really, really miss and probably that's why I like going to games because I can feel some of it, anyway."

After his triumph with the Devils, he took the Stanley Cup to his cottage at Magog in Quebec's Eastern Townships, held it aloft while standing in the back of a pickup truck during a police-escorted parade, had a party at the yacht club and celebrated with his wife, son and close friends.

It was one of the most memorable days of his life.

After coming close so many times but never going all the way, Burns had the title he most craved.

He said later the Stanley Cup was the crowning achievement of his career.

"He definitely was the best coach I had in my career," said former goaltender Felix Potvin, who played for Burns in Toronto. "He was hard, but honest."

In 1,019 games as an NHL head coach, his teams won 501 games, lost 353, tied 151 and lost 14 in overtime. In 149 playoff games, his teams won 78 and lost 71.

He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.

The NHL is far too political at times. The whole issue with Colin Campbell for instance. How can anyone do such a lousy job(from a fan's standpoint) yet keep their job? Easy. He is liked by those in power as he cowtows to their every whim(which is why the suspensions are a joke. The owners don't want their players gone for an overly long amount of time.).

Kevin Paul Dupont has a good piece on Campbell in yesterday's Boston Globe. His starting point is the court records in Canada that have him writing that Marc Savard of the Bruins is a "little fake artist." Savard has been out with a serious concussion.

"What's wrong with that?" Dupont asks. And he answers: "Nothing, according to Campbell's boss, Gary Bettman. Ditto for Bettman's deputy, Bill Daly, who, like his boss, believes Campbell is not only doing an acceptable job, but continues to remain an exemplary guardian of the game's officiating system and its overall on-ice integrity.

Dupont points out that the NHL, like it or not, does have a problem with Campbell, though, because "enough people in the viewing and listening audience believe Campbell has a problem."

He also points out Bettman's own history: "We only need to roll back the calendar nearly 18 years when a bold Bettman, less than six months on the job as NHL commissioner, had the mettle, common sense, and temerity to slap Dale Hunter with an unprecedented 21-game suspension for a dreadful and concussive late hit to Pierre Turgeon in the 1993 playoffs."

And now: "Bettman sat on his hands, mouth conspicuously sealed, when Campbell last season watched David Booth and Savard get lugged off the ice, in far worse shape than Turgeon in '93, and then dither about the rulebook not empowering him to punish their attackers (Mike Richards and Matt Cooke, respectively)."

1. Toronto beat Dallas 4-1. Sweet! Kulemin had 2 goals and his line looked very sharp! They had some good goaltending in this game as well.:)

2. New Jersey beat Washington 5-0. Washington's vaunted offense decided to take this game off.:p

3. Philadelphia beat Montreal 3-2. In a rare change, Philly was the one who came back from a deficit and ended up winning. They were down 2-0 at one point and then came storming back.

4. Tampa Bay beat Boston 3-1. Stamkos got his 20th goal of the season. From what I read, it looks like Boston did not show up for this game and left Rask hanging.

You know, shit like this really makes me question exactly how far humanity has really evolved. I sincerely hope they catch the garbage that did this and a little payback is issued to them. The article is from tsn.ca.:censored::censored::censored:

AFTER BURNS' FUNERAL, HOCKEY ITEMS STOLEN FROM WIDOW'S CAR

MONTREAL -- A grieving family is pleading for the return of cherished photos, a stack of hockey jerseys signed by NHL stars, and credit cards of a late, Stanley Cup-winning coach.

Pat Burns had barely been laid to rest when thieves smashed a window on his family's SUV and stole personal belongings.

His widow discovered Tuesday morning that thieves had stolen the items, including autographed sweaters from each of the 30 NHL teams. They were supposed to be auctioned for charity.

The robbers also swiped some of the mourning family's most important possessions, including photos, jewelry, articles of Burns' clothing and credit cards -- right out of the late coach's wallet.

Even bedsheets from a palliative-care residence were taken.

The theft was committed in Old Montreal just hours after Monday's funeral for Burns, who died Nov. 19 after a long battle with cancer.

The family urged the thieves to return the items -- especially the jerseys.

"It's a good thing to bring it back so we can do the job we wanted to do with the shirts," the late coach's son, Jason Burns, told The Canadian Press.

"There were a bunch of hockey jerseys that were going to foundations for needy people."

Jason Burns taped a plastic sheet over the Volkswagen SUV's broken window Tuesday, while police investigators snapped photos of the vehicle and dusted it for fingerprints.

"It's a sad event. It's not the greatest timing to do a thing like that," he said at the outdoor parking lot.

"It's (never) a great time to do this, but we think that the person should bring back the valuables."

Chunks of tinted glass from the rear passenger-side window were sprinkled on the vehicle's rear seat and a pile of tiny shards covered the floor mat.

Among the few visible items left inside the silver SUV on Tuesday was a crumpled McDonald's take-out bag.

Police say the robbers know exactly whose belongings they stole.

"They went through his stuff," said Const. Anie Lemieux of the Montreal police.

"The person who left with the shirts and everything knows that this is Pat Burns' stuff."

Burns' cousin Robin, who delivered a eulogy at the funeral, was disgusted by the crime.

Robin Burns said the late coach's widow had already had a tough day.

"Then to have personal effects taken out of your car (after the) funeral reception is absolutely deplorable," Burns said.

"Whoever it is, they must have no conscience."

He pleaded with the thieves, if they have "any type of conscience," to leave the items with a TV or radio station or with anyone who knows Burns -- and no questions will be asked.

"I'd only say to anyone listening, if you think you can sell them or do anything about them, then I think the police and the policemen's brotherhood and friends of Pat might have different ideas."

A former policeman, Burns was an award-winning coach for the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils. He guided the Devils to the Stanley Cup in 2003.

At his funeral, people remembered the gruff ex-cop as a tough but fair man who cared about his players and knew how to motivate them.

Dozens of prominent NHLers, past and present, were among more than 1,000 people who filed into a Montreal cathedral for the service on Monday afternoon.

Many went to a wake afterward at a nearby Irish pub, where they swapped old memories.

The crime occured between midnight and 9 a.m.

Asked if he thought it was possible the thieves specifically targeted his dad's SUV, Jason Burns replied: "I don't know, I really don't know."

But he noted, matter-of-factly, that sometimes these types of things happen in a big city.

"The Montreal police has done good work . . . they're working very hard to find the people who did it," said Jason Burns, who wore a New Jersey Devils cap.

"We're going to try and find (the valuables) as fast as possible."

Others were far less stoic.

On Tuesday, as news of the crime spread rapidly online, a flood of Twitter users expressed their outrage.

"I hope the thugs that robbed Pat Burns' widow go straight to hell. She's gone through enough. What sorry excuses for human beings!!!" read one posting.

Another said: "To the person who robbed Pat Burns' widow: I hope an angry mob forms, tracks you down, and beats you senseless. You are gutless."

The stolen items include:

--Thirty jerseys signed by star players from each NHL team.

--Two suitcases containing Burns' clothes, and those of his wife.

--A Movado men's watch.

--Many family photos.

--Bedsheets from a hospice.

--An iPad.

--Women's jewelry.

The Heater didn't score, but he looked pretty sharp and drew a couple of penalties (and quite a few jerseys thrown on the ice). Your 2011 Calder trophy winner scored a couple of goals too in his first game there since the '67s.

I'm hoping a swing through the east does something about that "last place in the division". :censored: We could use some consistency. That was our first shutout this year.

Sorry to "beat a dead horse," but this Easterner pays little or no attention to the Pacific Division unless the Bruins are playing one of those teams, or until the playoffs. After all, this is one of the two divisions in the NHL where there is not a single team in a single city that should have a hockey team (see all my previous posts on this topic).

More power to those of you who are fans of San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Phoenix, Dallas, and, for that matter, Florida, Carolina, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, and Washington, but, I mean, really? Hockey in Florida? Hockey in any of those places?

It was nice to see the Leafs break their losing streak, although I would have preferred they did so against someone other than the Bruins. The game was yet another argument against the shootout. As Jack Edwards, the Boston play-by-play man, put it at the end of overtime: "Now this game will be settled by a gimmick."

Kudos to the crowd in Toronto for giving Tyler Seguin a cheer for his textbook-beautiful assist in the second period, when he set up Campbell for a goal. It's always nice when real hockey fans respond to good playing, even by the opposing team.

So it looks like the Coyotes could remain in Phoenix. :frown: :frown: :frown: And that's gonna annoy some hockey fans here.

Following article by Shawn P. Roarke - NHL.com Senior Managing Editor:
Possible new Coyotes owner Hulsizer talks to media.

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Matt Hulsizer, a potential buyer of the Phoenix Coyotes, had his opportunity to convince the NHL's executive committee of his feasibility as an NHL owner Monday morning at the NHL Board of Governors meeting here.

The executive committee screens potential owners for the larger body of governors.

"It's kind of like a background meeting," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. "The owners want to have a sense of him as a person, his experiences, and why he is doing this and why he thinks there is an opportunity here. I think he did a great job."

Hulsizer's message to the committee was short and simple.

"I'm a hockey fan, a hockey coach and a hockey player and I would love to join the club," he said when asked what he told the committee during his hour-long audience with its members.

From all accounts, Hulsizer's message was well-received.

"The executive committee met with Mr. Hulsizer today and it was a very good interview," Daly said. "I thought Matt did a great job and the exec committee is unanimous in their support of his application for ownership."

Hulsizer, a 40-year-old financier from the Chicago area, played as high as the collegiate level, skating at Amherst College, a Division III school in Massachusetts.

"I played hockey in my driveway 30 or 35 years ago and I'm shooting against the garage, I don't think I said I want to grow up and be an owner," Hulsizer said. "I certainly did want to be a player.

"I'm obviously flattered and honored. I don't know that I ever thought I could afford to be an owner."

But his day as an owner may be coming soon.

Hulsizer said he has put together some strategic partners, but insists he will finance much of the asking price, which is expected to be in the $160 million range. And he said he believes he is close to finalizing the purchase of the team, which has been owned by the League since it was bought out of bankruptcy 15 months ago.

"We've been working with the city and we've been working with the League," he said. "I just had the interview with the executive committee and I think it went fairly well and I'm optimistic that we are going to get this thing done by the end of the (calendar) year."

Hulsizer still must strike a new lease for Jobing.com Arena with the city of Glendale and he said he believes that could be announced as soon as the city's council meeting Dec. 14.

"Obviously, he has to finalize it and hopefully that can get done in the near-term," Daly said.

Even with hurdles remaining, Hulsizer appears incredibly excited about the possibilities that lie before him if he is approved for inclusion into the owners' club.

He spoke in detail Monday for the first time in a public setting about some of his plans.

"I think if you can make a good product, and it's been my experience if you make a great product, hockey teams have a lot of value and those things tend to grow over time," he said.

He argued that a good product is the best way to re-energize a market that has seen attendance issues in the past few seasons.

"I think they haven't had a great product and I think we can turn it around," Hulsizer said. "I think we are going to have to earn the fans back. I don't think it is something that people are immediately going to give us credit and say, 'Oh, by the way there is a new owner.' I'd love for that to be the case, but I don't think that will be the case. We are going to have to earn back their faith and show that by putting out a good product."

He said he will leave others in charge of developing that product.

"I'm an investor. I'm writing a check. I'm not running the team. I'm not running the arena," he said. "We're going to hire the best people in the world to do that."

Among those hires will be a new team president.

"It will be somebody with experience, somebody (the media) will look at and say, 'Yeah, I get it, this is a person that is an A player.' That is what we are going to do, hire A-quality people across the organization, put a great product on the ice, and hopefully earn back the fans.'"

He also said he will not mess with the current front office, which led the Coyotes to the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season and has the team in fourth place in the Western Conference.

"Don Maloney is a terrific GM, one of the best, and Dave Tippet is a terrific coach," he said.

That was a tough way for Philly to lose. That shot with the puck ON the line with "0.0" left was pretty memorable. You'll never see a closer finish. Sharks have had a couple of those 3rd period collapses this year, so it was good to be on the other side of one for a change.

It has to be that or something else completely unrelated to hockey, because there is no rational hockey-specific explanation.
A very true statement.

If supporting the Leafs is irrational, what does that say about supporting the Devils. :(

Saturday night, we were aptly thrashed by Atlanta - and they scored 7 goals on only 22 shots, including Eric Boulton's first career hat-trick. :frown:

Toronto has been on a longer losing streak than New Jersey.

Come to think of it, if supporting the Leafs is irrational does that mean that the fans get pi?:innocent:

Note that in my post about supporting the Leafs I wrote "no rational hockey-related explanation." There could be a rational explanation that is not related to hockey ... although I'm having a helluva time trying to think of one. ;)

Here are the scores from Dec. 19th's games:

1. Dallas beat Detroit 4-3 in overtime. I believe we have a Dallas fan here but I cannot recall who it is as they have not been in this thread in quite a while.

2. Chicago beat LA 3-2.

3. In a bit of bad news for our resident bear, Colorado beat Montreal 3-2. Montreal is stumbling along before Christmas, going 5-4-1 in their last 10 games.

4. Washington beat Ottawa 3-2. Even with this win(and I am glad, as it meant Ottawa lost;)) Washington is still 7 points behind Philadelphia for first in the Eastern Conference!

I will give you a hug as well.

However, I think there will probably be a hugging clinic going on tonight, as it was not pretty for any of our teams!

1. Atlanta beat Toronto 6-3. Ugly, just ugly!

2. Florida beat Philadelphia 5-0. I will honestly admit that I am surprised by this score! I guess Philly got into the spiked eggnog a tad early as the Christmas break doesn't start for a few days yet.

3. Anaheim beat Boston 3-0. Out of these three games Boston was the only one that truly could have won the game had they not run into a goaltending clinic run by Hiller. He stopped 45 shots for the shutout(while Boston only gave up 25 shots).

One thing that made me happy tonight was the fact that Sidney Crosby got three more points(1 goal, 2 assists) en route to his 21 game points streak. 21 straight games with a point, that is pretty impressive! Ovechkin who?;)

I can't honestly compare them until Crosby has a few more seasons under his belt. If he can keep the pace he is on right now, he should be a lock for the Hall Of Fame years down the road. Who knows? By then, he could surpass Wayne Gretzky. You never know!:)

(And don't get me wrong, Gretzky was AWESOME...just not as the Coach of the Coyotes.;))

I definitely agree with you, Jen. I also think that Gretzky had and has more personality than Crosby

Crosby is the latest phenom that comes around every once in awhile like Bobby Orr,Mike Bossy, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemiux
but before we crown him let's see where he is after ten years, the above played great year after year over a long period of time a lot of players string together some great season then fizzle out
I have nothing agianst Crosby i like him and he is the top player today
Bobby Clarke got me watching hockey when i was a kid, Mike Bossy got me to really like the game and Wayne Gretzky made me a fan for life

I agree with you 100%(hence my earlier post:)). As other players have shown in the past(and not just in hockey either) one or two stellar seasons does not make one a Hall of Fame possibility.

I also disagree a little with what Ila said about his personality. I think that he has improved in this area and that he has become more mature(even if it by small increments) than he was when he first joined the NHL.
