I give you the zombie thread!

I don't know about you guys but I am a fan of the shambling undead. I have watched a shit ton of movies(not all of them of course) relating to zombies. My faves are

Dawn of the Dead(original and remake)
Night of the Living Dead(original and 1980's remake with Tony Todd)
Land of the Dead(say what you will but I think it was awesome)
Diary of the Dead(see above comment)
Whatever the name of that British one was where the journalists were running around in the woods.
Shaun of the Dead
Resident Evil: Degeneration

I won't mention the other Resident Evil titles because Paul Anderson fucked those up royally. Seriously. Alice? Nemesis was a creation whose sole purpose was to get physical with Milla Jovovich? The first was okay as it could have explained how the T-Virus got loose but after the first one, it completely went to shit and barely even followed the plot of the games.

I have the Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z books from Max Brooks and the graphic novel The Walking Dead. All three are excellent books to read. I read the Star Wars book Death Troopers where the Empire was experimenting with BioWeapons and creates a zombie virus. All in all it was so-so.

And for those who have read World War Z, here is an artists depiction of The Battle of Yonkers! It reeks of sheer awesomeness!

I don't think there is anyone who could fill the shoes of Bruce Campbell. If he lost some weight, the ol' Bruce could pull it off.I just hope that it won't be a special effects oriented movie though. That is how the newest Star Wars crapped out. Too much focus on the graphics.

Has anyone ever played the games, Evil Dead: A Fistfull of Boomstick and Evil Dead: Regeneration? I hope the movie will be something like the games. They are one of the few games I can play over and over again.

A best Zombie/Deadite movies list has to include both The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II, starring the self-professed B-movie actor Bruce Campbell as Ash.

The Evil Dead series is just full of awesomeness!

Has anyone ever made a zombie movie that is based more on the true zombie types - that is people who are put into the zombie state through the use of drugs? Many years ago I read a book which I think was called "The Serpant and the Rainbow" which was a scholar's investigation into Voodoo and the making of Zombies. If I remember right - zombies were made by using zombie powder which was some kind of poison like extract from frogs? or fish??? Anyway... has anyone seen a movie along these lines that is differant from the old bite ya - poof - your'e a zombie too now.????

Actually they made The Serpent and The Rainbow into a movie. It starred a very young Bill Pullman. The toxins supposedly used to make zombie powder are poison from the pufferfish(in less than lethal amounts of course) and some kind of powder that has the effect of making you very succeptible to suggestion.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Serpent_and_the_Rainbow_(film)

Alot of White Zombie and Rob Zombies music is based after the old pre-Romero version of hypnotized/voodoo zombies. Hell, even the groups name comes from an old B-rated horror film called "White Zombie".

It even had Ving Rhames as an Army Officer ... i'd hoped he would've played the twin brother of his " Dawn " character.

The Walking Dead is a literary masterpiece. I own the entire collection so far, and it is one of my favourite titles to read. Some of the twists are so strong, it feels like a punch to the gut.

Has anyone read Marvel Zombies? The first series was the best of the bunch, but the lastest series was pretty kick-ass too. Seeing a zombie Peter Parker lamenting how he had eaten Aunt May and Mary Jane, but that they were also quite tasty is quite interesting!

There was also a Ash vs Marvel Zombies(I picked it up in Trade Paperback). Highly recommended to any fans of Evil Dead and/or Bruce Campbell. It reads exactly like the movies did. Freaking awesome!!

Day of the Dead was the bleekest of his films. Fact was the Zombies won and the humans just needed to accept it , and live out the rest of their days in peace. Land of the Dead showed how humanity survived by isolating themselves , but they became worse than the zombies. Day of the Dead suffered from a crappy budget and zombie films were on the way out. Again the " Day " remake sucks and i hope they make a follow-up to the Dawn of the Dead remake.

I forgot to include the games in my list of zombie memorabilia.

My faves:

Resident Evil(has horrible voice acting but it spawned the series. Who wants a Jill sandwich?)
RE2: City of the Dead
RE3: Nemesis
RE: Code Veronica
RE: Dead Aim(A RE FPS)
RE: Outbreak Files #1 and #2
RE: 4(semi FPS with a new enemy, a parasite known as Las Plagas)
RE: 5
RE: Zero(enemy is leeches with the Progenitor Virus, predecessor to the T-Virus)
Land of the Dead:The Search For Fiddlers Green(kinda lackluster compared to the other big names but very well written and involved if a bit linear)

I haven't played Left for Dead, Dead Rising or Stubbs The Zombie so I can't rate them.:(

I think that by making the zombies fast it re-invigorated the Zombie genre. With the og zombies it was a numbers game , you could outrun them or just walk around them. But w/ fast zombies you needed to be more aware of your surroundings and ammo. One of the most tense moments in a movie is in 28 Days Later when they have to change their tire and you can hear the infected getting closer and closer. Here's hoping that 28 Months Later wraps up the story , the rage virus made it's way to Paris now what?

If you guys like Zombies, here's a new project you can look forward to.

A short film called THE SOLDIER, made in 2007, is being turned into a feature film.
Here's the quick description for it...

A cross between 'Saving Private Ryan' and '28 Days Later'. Set 13 days after the D-day landings, this film explores the horror of the Third Reich's disease testing experiments and the consequences. Made in 46 hours for a few hundred pounds.

If you're curious, here's the link to watch it on YouTube.
It only runs about 10 minutes, and it's fun to see:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuPgdTXxWgI

The movie version is tentatively titled The 4th Reich.
Here is a description for it...

June 1944, after the glorious victory on D-day, the armies of the combined allied forces begin their long push to Berlin with the aim of bringing down Hitler and the despised Nazi regime of the Third Reich.

But buried deep in secret files German Reichstag, is the chilling reality of Hitler's plan to create an eternal living hell, The 4th Reich.

Dr. Joseph Mengele, Hitler's chief scientist, was charged with creating a new super army of invincible soldiers. A force that would never be beaten. His experiments and research at the death camps of Auschwitz, Belsen and Birkenau would create unspeakable evil.

A small brigade of soldiers from 3rd Infantry Division, under the command of the battle hardened Captain Bathurst embark on an ever darkening quest to liberate Europe. Fighting their way through the French countryside, villages and war ravaged towns. Each step discovering progressively strange battles and events until they reach an abandoned research facility where the true horror begins...

And if you're interested, here's the web site for the film as well...

Yeah, but Disney sees in dollar signs, so a Marvel Zombies movie(animated of course, as the special effects would bankrupt the studio(s).;) could be feasible somewhere down the road. Heck, did you actually think that Marvel themselves would create zombie versions of their characters who were significantly less-than-heroic? I never did.

Another game w/ zombie like enemies is " Eternal Darkness " for the Gamecube. Based more on H.P. Lovecraft's work though , it had a great dismemberment game mechanic. Target specific limbs to make the enemies less of a threat , and the game would mess w/ your mind .... you'd be playing and suddenly the screen would go dark or say all your game data was erased. lol

Beside the Las Plagas all mentioned parasites were real and behave like described in the game.
Did you know that 1/3 of all humans are infected by the parasite "Toxoplasma gondii". It is suspected that it change you to a more risk fully behaviour, give you slower reactions and let you find cats (Pantherinae) more inviting and have less fear of them. I think that the RE movie titles could be salvaged if they made a live action version of RE2. The producers and director must remember however, that people want to see what it would look like in live action; it must follow the plot pretty close. Obviously there is some stuff that will be cut due to time restraints and such, but people want to see something that stays true, not the directors take on how the plot should go. That means no Alice or any new characters or ripping off of other movies like The Matrix or The Terminator in their action scenes or any stupid plot twists.

If they can remember that one simple rule of game/comic/book adaptations, the movie will be good.

I hope that they make a RE4 and 5 CG movie. I just hope that Ashley won't be as annoying in the movie as she was in the game... ;)

I have an awesome idea for a zombie video game. I call it Necrosis: City of The Dead

It would combine both elements of real time strategy with first person shooter action. Think something massive like World in Conflict but instead of being stuck in the 3rd person omnicient view, you can cycle to 2nd person view( think SOCOM or Full Spectrum Warrior where you are in a team and can direct a few guys) or 1st person.

The whole idea would be that there would be a large city where a zombie outbreak would occur and you are pretty much trying to get the hell out of Dodge or wipe out the undead. There would be a Campaign mode and a Solo mode. Campaign would have a story that you follow through but would be a bit more linear. Solo would be alot more open to the player(you can take on a whole city of zombies one bullet, crowbar, or Molotov Cocktail at a time) but you would not collect upgrades until the game is beaten nor do you have to do any of the missions to win the game. The objective would be either leave or cleanse the city.

You could either play as National Guard, police or civilian and each would have their pros and cons. Also, you would be able to choose what gender your character is, facial features etc.

The characters would have a realistic loadout of weaponry. None of this ridiculous amount of ammo thing going on or being able to hump a M240B, a shotgun and a rifle and still being able to run as if you were Usain Bolt.

Injuries would be a bit more realistic too. None of this "touch a medkit and now you are Morphine Joe who can survive almost anything" nonsense. You could do field surgery like in Metal Gear Solid 3 but your injuries would take time to heal; a couple of days to a couple weeks depending on the severity. Injuries would hamper your abilities; if you got a broken leg, you would be limping. If you got flak in your arm from an explosion, your accuracy would be degraded if you tried to fire a gun or swing a bat. Medkits would be few and far between and would be found in realistic places like in a car trunk or in a medicine cabinet. No gratuitious amounts of pills like in some games.

Weapons improvisation would be part of your abilities. If you wanted to hijack a car and plow over some dead fucks but it's missing the keys, you could hotwire it. If you wanted to make a Molotov, you can pick up some gas, combine it with a bottle and a rag and poof! You got a Molotov.

Environmental interaction would be more realistic too. If you shoot a wall, the hole would be permanent. If you are tasked with rigging up explosives, when they blow, they would leave a crater and not a black smudge. If you toss a brick of C4 into a house, it would fly to pieces. Grenade wounding radius would be more realistic as well.

I think all of this combined along with some other ideas would go along nicely in a zombie game.

While that sounds like it could be a very intense zombie game, I think that a lot of players would find that too difficult. Today, the majority of players enjoy the twitch-factor in games. They want to shoot, shoot, SHOOT! A lot of them don't want to limp around and moving slow whilst waiting for their leg injury to heal or to spend a lot of time hiding when they run out of ammo.

I would give the game a shot, though. It sounds like it would be one of the more realistic(well, as realistic as possible given the subject matter;)) zombie-survival games around.:)

Cool idea but that would be a huge undertaking to program.
I don't think there's ever been a zombie rts before , resource management would be important .... ammo , food and maintaining shelter and morale.

But most people prefer to run 'n' gun it Rambo style. lol Left 4 Dead is probably the best Zombie shooter out there now. The Resident Evil series is getting a big overhaul w/ pt 6. Dead Rising 2 comes out soon , I wish they'd do a Stubbs the Zombie sequel.

I think it is very difficult to make a long motivating Zombie simulation.

Postman, you really have to play Left for Dead 1 or 2 in multiplayer. I'm sure you will love it.

The chances of a Stubbs sequel are not too bad, it got good receptions and is still present, but I'm not sure who holds the rights.

Postman, one more thing about your proposed game. I think that today's systems would not be able to properly translate your ideas into a game. In a few years time, the AI and the graphics would probably be good enough for such a huge endeavor.

the game it self could be possible only it will take donkey years to develop an engine that can substain it so it can run like u want it, if we take the healing factor of injuries and healing out of the question and made it more mgs3 and not as complex we can have our selfs a game, onlline version will be the best option to make it multiplayer or stand alone as you can have an a massive universe like in WoW

Yeah. I'd also like to have a multiplayer option for the game as well. I don't know a damn thing about programming or what it would take to make this sort of thing.

I hope technology can give us a workable version of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNZCS-coZjY

A zombie game made like this would be so fuckin sweet, I don't think I'd ever leave the room!

A few years time, a developer team, some good graphic engine like the "Frostbite Engine" (used in Battlefield: Bad Company 2) or "Geo-Mod 2.0" engine combined with the "Havok" physics (used in Red Faction: Guerrilla), and most important a few million dollars.

That is cool. That should work with all pc games controlled with mouse, if you have a working version of the wall and the LabVIEW program.

pretty cool, but i think you will need some serious cash for this but it can be done, i can imagine been in a set with this projecting as you move around the house or stage city, now with 3d hologramic imaging and i am not talking about HD or Blueray tec nor that avatar movie i am talking about using a prisim system, where u use 3 points of ligth to project a 3d image, now apply this to a video game a masive mansion or dead stage city and we have our selfs a hell of a game, is pretty much based on the film gamer which take elements from 2nd life, i recomend the movie by the vay so angrypostman watch the movie and just imagen what can be done .
