Some great selections in this thread--it has brought back a lot of memories! In 1985, I was a Freshman in high school and while my tastes in music have always been very broad--I occasionally tended toward the "dark side"...

This performance features Cliff Burton (1962-1986), their original bass player and co-founder. RIP my brother. :respect:

YES!!! This is one of the greatest metal songs ever! The charge of The Light Brigade! The Brits are pretty ballsy when it comes to combat.

In this case, you might be confusing ballsy with suicidal - the charge of The Light Brigade is usually remembered as one of the greatest cock-ups in British military history.

I used to love Iron Maiden when I was at school!

Glad there are other "Maiden" fans here. They have been touring again; maybe you will be lucky enough to catch them somewhere. :) I saw them live once--it was unforgettable! Here's a couple more... "Where Eagles Dare" is based on the novel by Alistair MacLean that was turned into a movie starring Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton. As you can tell from the 2005 video--they still "got it." Up the Irons!!! :respect:

By 1989 I was in college and was turned on to this band by a friend. I think of these guys more in terms of the "90's" but "Beneath the Remains" snuck in at the close of the decade. "Inner Self" is probably the best known track from the CD.

Warning: If you don't like Metallica or similar bands, you may want to pass this one by... Otherwise enjoy!

I know that. But still, you gotta admit that charging an objective while out manned and out gunned is still a ballsy tactic. Plus Her Majestys soldiers are still the only blokes who will rush a position with fixed bayonets.

well you cant hardly go back to the early 90's and sepultura without mentioning nailbomb or soulfly. if youre sticking to cavalera that is. for me its arise, chaos ad and roots. followed by soulflys self titled. if you havent spent some time checking out nailbomb i highly advise it. raw early cavalera. being behind in aw9725 in age i unfortunately never got to see him play with sepultura however have seen soulfly countless times and one lucky time igor came with to play the drums and the whole set was sepultura - as close as i got to the real thing. my one and only bit of ink is off of roots. great great band. nothing like em.

We should start a '90's thread. Some great stuff in that decade too! I'm about the same age as Igor and a little younger than Max, Andreas, and Paulo. I was blown away by Igor's drumming in particular. My copy of "Remains" has the drum track to Inner Self. I too own Arise, Chaos AD, and Roots. I bought "Against" but ended up giving it away...

It's good to see someone younger than me that knows there was a Metallica long before "Load," "Reload," etc. If you read my profile you will see that I teach in college. My current students unfortunately think of Metallica as a "bunch of old fuckers" or "posers." They mostly came to know them through St. Anger. Sad...

its like this: (in reverse chronological order)

soulfly
sepultura (without cavalera)
sepultura (with cavalera)
nailbomb

this would explain why you know soulfly but not the others - without cavalera you wouldnt have any of the others - trust me

do a wikipedia search on max cavalera and see what ya come up with....

Their bravery isn't in doubt. But it's kind of ironic that if they'd actually managed to sort out which guns they were supposed to be charging and successfully done it, their bravery would've been forgotten by now.

As for bayonets...http://www.futilitycloset.com/2009/09/18/low-tech-soldiery/

:D The 80's had alot of crappy music, but alot of good stuff too!
And MTV went from basic, laughable videos in 1980 to gorgeous works of video-art by decades end.

Ska..The Specials were cool, but does anyone remember "The Selector" ??
Funboy 3 makes me think of "Gang of 4"..., "Bananarama" makes me think of "The TomTom Club"..!
Other 80's music....The English Beat("Save it for later", "Mirror in the bathroom"), The Clash ("Rock the Casbah"), Joy Division, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Police, Depeche Mode("never let me down"..), Kate Bush, The Church("Under the Milky Way"), Peter Gabriel ("Sledgehammer",, Tears for Fears(Everybody wants to rule the world"), The Judys, Talking Heads ("Burning down the house"), U-2, Sade, Motorhead, Love and Rockets/The Bubblemen, B-52's ("Rock Lobster")...
