OK Ariess and Violet i waited to see if you were gonna start it ... well it is upon us ... TOP CULT MOVIES!!
My definition of "Cult Film" is A. Movie w/ a rabid fan base but almost unknown in the mainstream and B. Movie that bombed in theaters but found new life in the home video market. So here goes
1. Night of the Demons
2. Flash Gordon
3. Donnie Darko
4. Big Trouble in Little China
5. Rocky Horror Picture Show ( Included due to its huge fan base and followings )
Those are my picks. Lets see yours.

Transjen got me to thinking...A lotta cool/wierd movies came out in the mid-to late 1970's to early 80's...
Remember "Dreamscape" "Altered States" or "Scanners"?
Someone mentioned "Warriors" which came out around the same time, and RB's "Big Trouble in Little China"
"Attack of the Killer Tomatos" is probably considered a cult film(because its so bad!) as is "Food of the Gods" (have you seen it? its worth seeing if only for the herd of wiener dogs with fake ears strapped on that are supposed to be big killer rats!)

Cheech and Chongs "Up in Smoke" used to be a great cult movie, they always played it at midnight and everyone would smoke pot in the theater!!
Can't do that anymore...:(

Like oh my gawd i haven't seen ' ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOS in years  Another great bad movie that was aired on cable around the same time was a movie about killer clowns from outer space but i can't recall the title  Jennifer

I could not agree with you more, Rockabilly. Perfect definition of a "Cult" film! You took the words right out of my mouth.

Rockabilly... a short list, but...OMG...I love Linnea Quigley!! (Night of the Demons)...I have all of her movies! Big Trouble in Little China!!

VioletLightning...great picks also...however, I would put "Plan 9" and "Reefer" on the "B" (Bad Movie Thread...still to be made).

Transjen...I disagree with you on Escape form New York & Halloween. They both did pretty good Box Office when they came out.

Angry Postman...I need to do some research on your picks. Only familiar with "Planet Terror". I was managing a video store (83-89) and I put it on in the store. If I remember correctly, it was an "Alien" rip-off?

Some of my favorite Cult Films...next post!

First off, I cannot believe none of you guys put "Blade Runner" on your lists. People forget that when it came out it was a box office disaster!! I think it's popularity today is a result of movie buffs like us standing beside it!

I love movies! I probably watch 25-30 movies a week (maybe more at times). Lists are a challenge for me, because I have so many faves. I'll think of some tomorrow...and the next day, etc. Off the top of my head...here we go...feel free to comment (thumbs up or down)!

ADVENTURES OF BUCKARRO BANZAI
ASSAULT OF THE KILLER BIMBOS
BLADE RUNNER
CRIMES OF PASSION
DARK BACKWARD
DEAD-ALIVE
EVIL DEAD TRILOGY (btw, a fourth film in planning)
ERASERHEAD
FANTASTIC PLANET

Now this is where "Hollywood" really, really gets me going!! Re-making classic, and I mean CLASSIC movies!!

Near Dark is a horror masterpiece! It is quite possibly the first and still best "modern vampire movie"!! No capes, no bats, no fly-eating go-fers!

And what a cast...re-uniting Lance Hendrickson, Bill Paxton and Jenette Goldstein from ALIENS, and also starring an under-rated actress, Jenny Wright (her last movie was Lawnmower Man-1992!!!???).

Ah yes..the Hollywood Re-Make!! Manchurian Candidate!!:frown: Fail-Safe!!:frown: There are alot more that did not need to be re-made!!

That said, there are a some that, for a multitude of reasons, were very, very good in their re-worked, re-imagined form.

The Near Dark remake had potential. Bill Paxton stepping into Lances role, Heather Langenkamp, and Milo Ventimiglia taking on Adrian Pasdars role. Ironic as Adrian and Milo play brothers on Heroes. Check the wiki for more details.

Damn, you guys are really bringing up some golden oldies!! Love it!
I think they remade "Manchurian Candidate" a few years back...
Can't think who was in it, but it wasn't near as good as the original. It lost all that Cold War espionage feel that gave the story its motivation.

Lair of the white worm was good, I remember liking the girl that was in it (the evil one?)
Anyone seen "Frankenwienie"?

Frankenweinie? Was that Tim Burtons short film? I think its on my Nightmare Before Christmas DVD. How about Gymkata!! or The Last Dragon " Am i the prettiest ? SHO NUFF!! " or on the animation front The Last Unicorn or Wizards?

They "re-made" Manchurian Candidate with Denzel Washington and ????. I borrowed movie from a friend....garbage. As you say, Violet, "Man-Can" was a "product of it's time!

BTW....Check out the "Outer Limits: 100 Days of The Dragon" (original series)

If we're talking animation cult films... :D
I gotta nominate "Heavy Metal". It still stands up. The follow-up was pure dreck in comparison though.
"Wizards" was ok, I remember it had some good animation, and a few good moments. "The Hobbit" was pretty bad as I recall, I still remember the songs "Where there's a whip, there's a way" and "Frodo of the nine fingers" because they were so comically bad!

Back to regular features,
I was thinking that "Idiocracy" is also a good cult movie. I think it was on the shelf for at least a couple years before they finally released it.
There was alot of gossip about what was in it and why they wouldn't release it. When it finally did come out, I don't think it did alot of box office business, but I know it has finally caught on, and now its becoming a regular on cable/satellite tv.

I think Fudd-Ruckers was a little miffed that their franchise evoled ( de-evolved ) into Butt-Fuckers and Starbucks offers blowjobs w/ a biscotti. LOL :)

:D Rockabilly I think your exactly right!!
Its cool that the film (and us!) eventually won out.

I swear I was in Home Depot or Lowes the other day, and there was a guy in front that sounded just like the guy welcoming customers to Costco...

...Don't know why, but I just thought of "Schlock" and "C.H.U.D." !! Both bad movies, but each definitely has a following..

I still say you cannot improve on the original...so why bother! A sequel perhaps, but not a re-make!!

BTW, Rockabilly....Trancers I thru V are available in a box set!! My favorite music, movie, etc store is ordering me one from the states. And, there was a Trancers VI as well.
