New laws in australia that come into effect on 1st July 2013.

Essentially the person can have all their government records reflect their "new" identity.

It says it in the article, but the proof they are eligible is a letter from a doctor saying they are trans or intersex.

I spoke to my girl about this, and it seems that since she is now recorded and recognized everywhere as a woman (Medicare, passport, birth certificate, centerlink).. The potential now exists for her to legally enter into marriage in Aus with someone who was the same birth sex as her. Eg a male to female trans can perhaps legally marry a man.
