I don't want to steal mojo from Shadows or anyone else who by all rights should start this thread, but I'm Jonesin' to talk about the coming season. Got a pile of tickets in the mail. Pre-season start is just a week away!
Who do you like for your division? Out west, strong will be Vancouver, Kings and Sharks.
Gotta say that a couple of the trades were tough (Seto was a favorite), but on balance, Sharks look strong. Better D for sure and more size and speed up front. See you in the cup final! :innocent:

The Bruins finally signed Brad Marchand, and they look good in their division. I am still working hard to score a couple of tickets for October 6th, when the Championship Banner will be hoisted to the rafters of the Garden!

In all seriousness, I am hopeful of the Leaf's chances this season. I think they will be an improved team over last year, and if they can get off to a better start, they should be okay. I don't think they will win the Cup, but I do think they can make the playoffs.:)

Colorado looks like they want to make the playoffs this year. Got rid of Peter Budaj and Brian Elliot in goal that imploded Last year and being last in GAA I think it was 3.6 GAA. Signed Varlomov from Washington and Giguire from FA. Last year was Depressing from being in the playoffs to being the 2nd to last team in the west. I think Playoffs for them is Possible with the Avs lineup being young and Milan Hejduk the only one that is couple of years away from Retirement and the only one from the Avalanche Glory Days.

That's a good point. Thanks Jen.;):)
The teams to watch this year will be Montreal and Winnipeg. Can Montreal finally get through a full season playing hockey to their full potential or will they choke again when it comes to the important games? They haven't made any major changes over the off-season. I think that they could have used a good shakeup, even if it was only verbally.
Winnipeg bought a team with a lot of potential. I don't think that they will win the cup this season, but they should make the playoffs. They're stuck in the east division for this season so it should be an interesting race for first place. Watch for Winnipeg to become cup contenders during the next few seasons.

Montreal doesn't need a personnel change so much as it needs an attitude change. It's time for the Habs to concentrate on performing as hockey players and not trying to win Oscar nominations as Best Actors when it comes to trying to milk penalties out of non-penalty "infractions."

I agree the new Jets should be a fun team to watch and should make the playoffs and may be a cup contender in a few years but for now i only see opening playoffs then done but the fans could provide them with extra gusto with there support something they really never had in Altana

Saw the first game action of the 11/12 preseason last night on the NHL Network the Mapleleafs vs Flyers
While it was nice seeing some new hockey action i'm sorry to say Shadows that the Mapleleafs look the same as last year

Sharks won their pre-season opener v. Anaheim 6-1. I didn't see/hear the game, but the stats are pretty dominant.
Clowe and Couture put in a decent appearance, 12-15 minutes, but it was largely young guys playing for both teams. Greiss was in goal for the whole game.
None of the big new trades played, Havlat, Handzus, Burns, etc. New D-men Jim Vandermeer and Colin White played though. Brad Winchester (who I used to "hate") is now with the Sharks, getting an assist and penalty. :-)
I'm looking forward to seeing a pre-season game soon, and seeing how things start shaking out.

And then they won their next game 4-2. It's pre-season, so I don't take too much stock in how a team does(lots of players won't even end up cracking the opening day roster). The Leafs had a pretty good pre-season last year, and stunk coming out of the gate. I think they will be better this year.:)

I think the Sharks might be in a little trouble with their goaltending. According to an article at tsn.ca, Niittymaki will be out for 12 weeks due to hip surgery. Of course, Niemi is their #1, so it might not affect them overly much.

Niemi hasn't practiced yet either this year. He had surgery to remove a cyst from an "undisclosed location". They say he'll be alright for the season, but who knows.
Good thing it's the preseason, we've got seven keepers on the roster. :-)
I think Greiss will be in goal for a while. He was the backup for Nabokov two years ago.

16500 saw the Sharks improve to 3-0 last night. Unlike the home preseason opener where they spanked Anaheim with 49 shots and won 5-1, it was a goaltending/defensive struggle against Phoenix. Very few shots throughout. Sateri, in goal for the Sharks got the shutout and first star, despite some dangerous rebounds that the Sharks jumped on first. Ferriero got the goal and the second star. LaBarbera got the third star for Phoenix.

Boston's offense has been scary-good so far in preseason. If their goaltending is the same as last year(barring any post-SC lapses by Tim Thomas, it should be) they should be at the top, or near the top, of the Eastern Conference this season.
Crosby participated in a controlled scrimmage, so he has taken another step towards being able to play fully again. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before that happens.

Sharks are now 5-0 in the preseason and 22/24 on the PK. The latter number is more interesting since they're tweaking the approach after last year's mediocre numbers. The last two games were against the Cauncks, but not really since they've been sitting most everyone that's got a locked spot. Nice to see Malhotra back to playing form.

Can't wait for The Avalanche to start their season tonight. They retire Forsbergs Number and start the season with Varlomov in goal. I think that the Avs made a good move in trading their draft pick to Washington for Varly. Also a nice pick in Giguire as he won in Anahiem in 2007.
Best thing to start the Season. A rivalry renewed from 1996-2002 as we play against Detroit. Man I miss those Days.:(

Whew! Toronto escaped with a 6-5 victory tonight to improve to 2-0 for the season. They had a 5-1 lead at one point, and then seemed to fall asleep at the second half of the third period. Thank goodness they didn't completely fall apart and were able to win the game!
Other games of note:
1. Philadelphia beat New Jersey 3-0. Dauls won't be very happy about this.
2. Boston beat Tampa Bay 4-1 for their first victory of the season. Smc will be very happy about this.
The other games that have TLB fans are still ongoing.

To those of you who have asked, I have no explanation for the performance of my Bruins thus far this season. The "hangover" from an off-season of Stanley Cup celebrations is no longer viable as an excuse. I am a very disillusioned (albeit loyal) fan.
One thing that would help right now would be a hug from a Penguins fan, of course in the interest of hockey loving in general. ;)

I haven't kept up with the current NHL season very much so far this year. I did, however, catch the third period of the Montreal vs. Boston game the other evening. I was happy to see Montreal win. The thing is, I'd of been happy for either team to win (but I tend to lean a bit toward Montreal). I get razzed at work for being a fan of both Montreal and Boston, considering how both teams are such rivals.
The only other hockey that I've caught have been University of Maine games. I got to see an exhibition game versus New Brunswick at the start of the season and I've also seen a few games on television. It's always good to see the Black Bears win.

How so? Both Seguin and Kessel are still young and they are both playing very well. After that All-Star game snub(and the jackass Ovechkin taking the picture of him), Kessel's demeanor and play have totally changed. He is more of a complete player than he was before(shades of this were shown during the latter part of the season last year).
Kessel: 12G 12A +9
Seguin: 11G 9A +14
The only difference is that Kessel is playing on a team that doesn't have as much depth as Boston. If Toronto had a deeper team who knows how many points Kessel would have?
I think both teams did well with this trade. Neither team lost out, and both players are playing well. I am personally sick and tired of the whole Seguin/Kessel "who's better?" talk.
And who even knows if either player will be like this in the future? Either of them could get hurt and be a shadow of their former selves or they could pull a Yashin and have their game totally disappear! Heck, Jonathan Cheechoo had a 50 goal season, so I think no one can truly say anything definitive about this trade until both of their careers are finished.:)

Do you define "southern" as below the Mason-Dixon line? If so, you need to include Washington (which, as anyone who has spent time there doing anything other than tourist stuff can plainly see, is decidely a U.S. SOUTHERN city).

That's a close call as Washington has been known to get cold enough to make ice. Since I don't like Washington (and Ovechkin) then I'll classify it as a southern city and it's always a good day when they lose.

Ah, so it's weather and not geography? I prefer that approach, as you know. If you can't grow up in a place and play pond hockey, that place should never, ever, ever have a team in the NHL.

I've never been a fan of Buffalo so I like to see them lose.
Montreal won tonight which is good to see.
Buffalo, as well as Boston, are in the same Division as Boston. Unfortunately(due to that fact), one of the teams had to win tonight.
I was not surprised to see Lucic being in a fight tonight, which obviously stemmed from their last game.
I wonder who can end Boston's win streak? They play Detroit next, so it could happen there. Sometimes it's better to lose a game rather than go on a looooong win streak, as it can sometimes cause a fairly long losing streak afterwards. That's not to say that this will happen this time, but it has happened in the past(it happened to Washington after they started the season 7-0).
I wonder how many years Tim Thomas has left? He's 37, and I can't imagine him playing past 40 to be honest. I wish that Toronto had a goalie like him the past few years(it's almost been like Musical Chairs with the amount of goalies that have come and gone in Toronto). I really like Reimer, but Thomas is a proven veteran.

I'm kind of bummed that there was no hockey yesterday. I realize that it was the American Thanksgiving, but there was still hockey played on the Canadian Thanksgiving! If anything, the Canadian teams should have played. There could have been 3 games(Winnipeg, being the newest team, would have gotten the day off;)) played!

On a more serious note, Happy Thanksgiving to all our American members!:)

With that said the hit he took from TooToo Saturday was just plain wrong!
TooToo should have been thrown out and if he doesnt get suspened it's open season on Miller.
I dont want to see any goalie get hit like that it's uncalled for!

Don't forget to add Claude Giroux(Flyers), Jeff Skinner(Hurricanes), and Milan Michalek to that list. Giroux has the lead in points, Skinner is the defending ROTY, and Michalek is the leading goal-scorer.
That's right, folks. The Boston Bruins now sit atop the Eastern Conference (remember how they started the season), after putting a serious hurting on the Flyers today, 6-0!

Let's put it in perspective, smc! They were only playing Calgary after all.;)
(against any other team they only would have scored 7 goals:p)
They do look to be a team that will more likely than not(I give it a 95% chance as there is always a chance for an upset, no matter how unlikely) be in the SCF once again. The scary thing is that they don't have any top scorers(ones that are in the race for the overal points race), but that their scoring is spread out amongst their entire team!
I just read this morning that the NHLPA has rejected the league realignment. And this after the league's owners voted in favour of it and the fans want it. Perhaps it's time that the players learned who actually pays their salary and that they should just shutup and play when and where they're told to play. If they don't like it they can always quit. They are hundreds of other hockey players that would gladly take the current players' places to play in the NHL.

I write this during the first intermission of the Bruins-Canucks game, and don't have much time. If the game keeps on as it's going, I will have to go down to the Garden and put on a Bruins uniform so they'll have enough players to finish. I suspect every Boston-based Vancouver fan is being similarly recruited.
Anyhow, I read about the NHLPA rejection this morning, too. I think there's a bit more to this. According to Don Fehr, the NHLPA head, "In order to evaluate the effect on travel of the proposed new structure, we requested a draft or sample 2012-13 schedule, showing travel per team. We were advised it was not possible for the league to do that. We also suggested reaching an agreement on scheduling conditions to somewhat alleviate player travel concerns ... but the league did not want to enter into such a dialogue."
This seems to have been a reasonable request. The league's refusal (saying it was not possible) seems to be calculated deliberately to precipitate a confrontation with the union.
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Day told the Associated Press, "We believe the union acted unreasonably in violation of the league's rights. We intend to evaluate all of our available legal options and to pursue adequate remedies, as appropriate."
This would not be the first time a boss has done something like this just for the chance to drag a union in front of a court or arbitrator to get a ruling in hopes of weakening that union.
I could be wrong, though. Who knows for sure?
Back to the game now ...
Well, the results of the big Stanley Cup Finals rematch are in. The score was Vancouver 4, Boston 3.
However, in 5-on-5 hockey, the score was Boston 2, Vancouver 0.
Tells you something, eh?
...Tells you something, eh?

I was disappointed to read this too. I was looking forward to the realignment. From a fan perspective, it's nice to see all the teams in the league each year.
Travel?! Are you serious? It's not like there's any fairness to the way travel is now. It looked to me like the new format might even reduce travel.
I don't understand what is really going on...

In addition to what I wrote above about this issue, I think the Players Association is also sending a message in advance of negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement. Both sides are posturing: the League's refusal to provide a sample schedule is a part, as is the NHLPA's refusal to okay a reasonable realignment.

Formats of the past had
1] previous season's Stanley cup team plays a team of all star made up from the other teams in the league
2] the standard two all star teams ie East teams vs West teams
3] the fansaty draft remember the capt's pick there teams
4] make a NHL all star team vs the Russians or other top European team
I like number four the best

smc, being a Bruins fan, do you think that the past two incidents involving Tim Thomas's political actions(White House visit and his posts on Facebook) are (or going to be) a detriment to the team? I can't help but feel that this will have some effect on the team.
smc, being a Bruins fan, do you think that the past two incidents involving Tim Thomas's political actions(White House visit and his posts on Facebook) are (or going to be) a detriment to the team? I can't help but feel that this will have some effect on the team.
They absolutely are a detriment. Irrespective of the political content, the actions of Tim Thomas are detracting from the team. On the day the Bruins visited the White House, the story was Tim and not the Bruins. With his recent Facebook post, you can see his teammates starting to grow weary of it. On the TV news, they stand by him in their words, but their eyes reveal a different perspective.
It's really unfortunate. I thought Tim Thomas should have been fined by the league for the crap he pulled at the White House. And just to show that it's not about the politics for me, I thought Major League Baseball should have fined Theo Epstein (then Red Sox general manager) when he did the same thing during the Bush years.
I was watching tv yesterday morning and saw an interview with Brian Burke. The volume was turned down lower than I could comfortably hear and there were people in the room talking at the same time, but I was sure that I heard Brian Burke say that Toronto is the centre of the hockey universe. I almost lost my breakfast at that mention. If that is what he did say I completely disagree with him.
I would consider Canada as a whole to be the centre of the hockey universe, but not the Toronto area. If I had to pin it down to a region in Canada then I would say that the prairie provinces are the centre of the hockey universe. I'm sure that other hockey fans who read this will disagree with me on where the centre of the hockey universe is. So, fans, where do you think is the centre of the hockey universe?

Thanks smc. I figured you would have posted an unbiased view regardless of your love of the Bruins. I agree with you, and feel that his actions are one of the main reasons for their recent swoon. I am wondering if they will attempt to trade him before the deadline? I realize that it's unlikely, but you never know! They have Tukka Rask, and they would probably get some good pieces for Thomas.
I just hate when an athlete tries to make himself bigger than the team.I realize that he is the only American on the team(hard to believe, eh?), but he needs to realize that the team comes first! I would feel the same even if it was a Canadian player playing on a Canadian team. Hockey should be about hockey!

Agreed, but Steven Kampfer is also from Michigan. So, compared to last year, we actually have had a 100% increase in Americans on the Bruins.

Apropos of the Tim Thomas discussion in earlier posts, I am adding here a column by The Boston Globe's Hockey Hall of Fame columnist Kevin Paul Dupont, who says far more eloquently than have I what is really at issue with our goalie's recent behavior.
Thomas needs a save to restore his legacy
By Kevin Paul Dupont
Globe Staff / February 12, 2012
It can still end well here for Tim Thomas. Right now, the Facebook-posting, self-imploding goaltender is shoulder to shoulder with Curt Schilling and Manny Ramirez regarding how Boston will remember him. Not just as a player, but as a person, a key player-citizen in what is the unique nation of Boston sports.
Through a trio of Facebook postings issued over the course of 19 days, the 37-year-old Thomas has told the world that he wants to be heard. He feels the need to get his thoughts out there, and we are left to believe he wants to stimulate thought and conversation.
But he doesn?t want the media talking to him about it, and he told a gaggle of reporters, bloggers, and photographers Thursday at the Bruins practice facility in Wilmington that he?ll simply stop talking whenever he is asked about the personal beliefs he is posting for the world to see.
?Peace. Out, ?? Thomas said Thursday, abruptly truncating an interview when asked another question about his posting.
OK, count me as confused, and I believe that confusion is headed to a bad place for Thomas, his Boston legacy, his team, and his teammates.
Perhaps Thomas is just naive, acting the way a child does when putting hands to the side of his or her head to block out what a parent or playmate is saying.
Or worse, maybe he?s delusional, truly believing that he can post about the perceived evils of big government and what he believes are threats to religious freedom, and that no one in the media should think, or has the right, to ask for further explanation or context.
Wednesday?s posting, which included a quote from Martin Niemoller, the late Lutheran pastor who wrote the missive, ?First they came,?? touched on such topics as Nazi Germany, trade unions, Jews, Communists, and Catholicism. In this town, any one of those subjects is a pretty good chew. Imagine the reaction had he included a word about hockey?
Whether Thomas is naive or delusional, his ?going Facebook?? is not going to wear well here, not in a town where fans and media invest deeply, perhaps care too much, in every little thing relating to their professional teams and athletes. Not only will fans and media quickly get fed up, but far more important, so will teammates, Bruins management, and ownership.
Contrary to what some of those significant Spoked-B partners are saying publicly right now, Thomas already has irritated some and angered others with his words, as well as his Jan. 23 White House no-show.
One teammate dismissed it with the standard, ?Hey, he?s a goalie, what do you expect? They?re all nuts.??
Sure, funny, to a point. But it will only get worse if Thomas keeps posting, then keeps invoking his right to remain silent, leaving the media to turn repeatedly to teammates, management, and ownership to ask, ?Hey, what?s with the goalie? Is he right? Is he angry? And, by the way, what do you think of politics, religion, and do you practice contraception???
Eventually, in a team setting, Thomas?s postings and subsequent media attention become corrosive, especially with players, many of whom don?t care about his sociopolitical views or simply don?t want them intruding in their workplace.
Thomas in turn can tell them it?s the media doing the intruding. But that?s the media?s raison d?etre. Case in point: when the intruding media did the legwork that chased Richard Nixon out of the house that Thomas didn?t dare visit because he can?t tolerate bad government. Seems the goalie and the media are sometimes on the same page.
Thomas fails to understand that he has a voice here, delivered through his Facebook missives, because of 1. his success, 2. the team that employs him, and 3. the fellow employees, including players, coaches, and managers, who have aided greatly in his success.
Let?s be clear: He has every right to say anything and everything he pleases. He has the same right not to have to explain himself to the media. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool.
But with freedom and action come reaction and consequence. That is what Thomas is missing, or choosing to ignore. He is not operating in parallel universes, allowing him to deliver missives via Facebook and then assimilate anonymously, and without accountability, back into the team structure.
Oh, he?s right, there is a lot of wacky stuff going on in the world right now, much of it crazier than anything he has touched on in his postings. But he has watched far too many ?Star Trek?? reruns if he believes he can beam himself out of one world and act as if the other one never happened. Whoa, Scotty! Not the way it works. Not even in the make-believe world of pro sports.
True, he is not obligated to respond to the media. But he does have an obligation not to leave his teammates and the Bruins front office left to answer for him. He is, in hockey terms, leaving everyone in the organization out to dry. A goalie should understand how that feels.
Thomas skipped a White House visit, which was a mandatory team event. General manager Peter Chiarelli cut him a big break, told him he would not be punished or suspended for not attending, and by nightfall Thomas posted his railings on the government as a means of explaining his absence. Which in turn had club president Cam Neely issuing a statement that Thomas?s actions were disappointing and that his views did not express those of club ownership or the team.
Thomas used the back of the franchise and the shoulders of his teammates to promulgate his views that the US government has run amok. Skipping the mandatory team event could have prompted Chiarelli to fine or suspend him. Which, in turn, could have led Thomas to file a grievance through the Players Association, exposing himself, team, and teammates to more rounds of media scrutiny. I?ll bet, for the good of his team, and the hope of a second Stanley Cup, Chiarelli chose the high road.
Chiarelli, by the way, politely continued to offer ?no comment?? when I asked him his thoughts in the wake of Thomas?s actions Thursday.
Schilling, for all his incessant talk and bluster, remains around town and in decent standing with Red Sox Nation. His self-importance grew to be annoying, but he?s OK, and he remains within earshot while running a video business tethered to another make-believe world.
Ramirez, because of his abundant talent to hit a ball, was a tolerated fool in his Red Sox days. His image was soiled badly by his suspension in Los Angeles for the use of banned substances and later his abrupt quitting in Tampa. He leaves Sox fans wanting to erase him from everything but the box scores.
Thomas is a great talent. For a guy who was ignored and sometimes chided during chunks of his amateur career, his talents minimized and style quirky, he now has a shot of making the Hall of Fame. With one Stanley Cup and two Vezinas, maybe that?s a lock now.
The question for the moment is, what will he leave behind in Boston? Will it be Tim Thomas, the uber-talented scrapper who was the No. 1 reason the Bruins won the Cup in 2011? Or will it be the guy who opted to turn the club?s White House visit into his own political pedestal, then continued to leave everyone else on the team to explain his politics, his sociological beliefs, his views on both freedom of speech and freedom of silence?
If Thomas thinks it?s only the media observing him now with a quizzical eye and a ball of confusion, again he is either profoundly naive or delusional. His teammates and the front office are wondering. Some of them are simmering. So are the fans. What they care most about is the team. Most of them just want to be sure he cares the same.
Schilling?s bloody sock made everyone believe. Ramirez?s parade of horribles made everyone want to forget. What will Thomas?s Facebook page do for him?
Sure, funny, to a point. But it will only get worse if Thomas keeps posting, then keeps invoking his right to remain silent, leaving the media to turn repeatedly to teammates, management, and ownership to ask, ?Hey, what?s with the goalie? Is he right? Is he angry? And, by the way, what do you think of politics, religion, and do you practice contraception???

Jeez, Jen, I hope everything is okay. The news on the hockey front is that it looks as if your Penguins are doing fine, for the most part, and that my Bruins are not going to catch the Rangers. In fact, I think they will be fighting with Ottawa for the division lead up to the end, unless someone suddenly pulls away. Meanwhile, the debacle in Montreal continues.

I've never been a Rangers fan, but they have had one of their best seasons ever and look like the team most likely to win the cup this year. I really hope that they don't win the cup, but they are doing everything right, so far.
My Bruins are noted for a very funny series of TV commercials teaching "fan etiquette," featuring the Bruins mascot in Boston Garden's restrooms and elsewhere. Now, as the regular season ends, the Bruins have released a new spoof of 1970s TV sitcoms. "The Bear and the Gang" features the mascot, Bruins players (like Brad Marchand, in the photo below), Jack Edwards (our great TV play-by-play guy, pictured below in the center), and Rene Rancourt (pictured below on the left; he butchers the national anthems of the United States and Canada every night the Bruins play at home, but is a bona-fide "fan favorite).
There are supposed to be two episodes that will be made available during the playoffs.
Enjoy!

Hockey season for YOU, Jen ... but not necessarily for any of the rest of us.
Perhaps the Penguins are experiencing that "karma is a bitch" phenomenon, as retribution for some of their escapades during the last week of the regular season?
Don't get me wrong: I hate the Flyers and I don't want to see them advance.
Just for the fun of it, and to give my hockey-fan friends on this site something to make fun of me for later on, I am going to go out on a limb and make predictions about the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Los Angeles will beat Vancouver in six games -- a big UPSET and a huge blow to my imaginary NHL in which Los Angeles doesn't even have a team.
St. Louis will beat San Jose in five games.
Phoenix will prevail over Chicago in six games, despite -- again -- that there shouldn't even be a hockey team in Arizona.
Detroit will beat Nashville in seven games.
Ottawa will make the New York Rangers work much harder than anyone expects, but the Rangers will advance after six games.
Florida (another place that shouldn't have a hockey team) will beat the New Jersey Devils in six games.
Pittsburgh will defeat Philadelphia. It will take seven games, and there will be several Penguin players who are physically unable to advance to Round 2.
The Boston Bruins will beat Washington in six games.
Okay, let's see how fucked up these prediction are ... in a couple of weeks!

No, I hate them regardless of anything else, including whether they are the team the Bruins would next face.
I made my prediction, though, based on an honest assessment of team chances, not personal "favorites" in each match-up. Had it been done that way, none of those southern teams would have been picked.

It is true that the Penguins function well as a team without Crosby, I worry about Fleury choking. The guy is good but, not always consistant in terms of play.
Crosby did play well yesterday and I see them going strong throughout this series but, the Flyers are brutal when it comes to anything physical.
Finesse vs. brawn. We'll see;)
It's interesting that you say "favorites" especially when you are so sure that the Bruins will make it to the second round.
Sorry, but your statement above makes no sense to me. I used the word "favorites" to imply which team I would prefer to win in a matchup, and then stated that my predictions were based on my assessment of who is likely to win, regardless of whether that team is my "favorite" as so defined.
Are you implying that I picked the Bruins to beat the Capitals because they are my favorite? If so, you are wrong. I am a lifelong Bruins fan, but I would not predict their victory if I didn't think it was likely. Rather, I would have said that a Bruins victory was my desire.

However, you should come up to Montreal sometime (that's if you already haven't), and see what I mean. Come check out a game at the Bell Centre (hopefully during a Bruins - Canadiens match) and see how fanatical that we are.
As for not understanding my point? Well, the only thing that I have to say is that I tried to make my earlier statement as clear as possible.
Again, my apologies if I offended you:):respect: It is, after all, my opinion on this situation.

Indeed, they do.

You wrote: "I live in Montreal. In case you have forgotten, this is hockeytown."
You didn't write "a hockeytown."
However, you should come up to Montreal sometime (that's if you already haven't), and see what I mean. Come check out a game at the Bell Centre (hopefully during a Bruins - Canadiens match) and see how fanatical that we are.
I have, many times, seen Canadiens games in Montreal, both at the Bell Centre and at the old Forum. In fact, the first time I saw a hockey game at the Forum, the majority of the current teams in the NHL did not even exist.
And I have been to many games here in Boston when the Canadiens are in town. I travel to the games on the T -- our subway -- and the cars are packed with people wearing Habs shirts. I love to listen in on their conversations and then make a provocative pro-Boston hockey remark, in French, and watch their reactions. Yeah ... good times!
As for not understanding my point? Well, the only thing that I have to say is that I tried to make my earlier statement as clear as possible.
That's nice, but I still have no idea what your point was about "favorites." Since it was directed to me, I would think you would want to explain it to me. But it's not important to me if it's not important to you.
Again, my apologies if I offended you:):respect: It is, after all, my opinion on this situation.
No offense taken. I know where hockeytown is, regardless of what you write. ;)

What happened to all our great hockey discussions? We were discussing the Stanley Cup Playoffs much more last year than this year!

Fuck this. I'm pissed off and drinkin'!
(and crying)
Brendan Shanahan announced a 25-game suspension for the Coyotes thug who goes by the name of Raffi Torres. I think Torres, a serial offender, is getting off easy, and I hope this sends a message to similar players throughout the NHL.
I think it's great that Shanahan has posted a detailed explanation of his decision. You can watch the video here:

The way the playoffs have been going so far(weirdest one I've seen in quite a few years!), there wouldn't be any reason to make fun of you! There are so many potential upsets already in motion, so it's really a crapshoot as to who will win!
I know that all the series (except one) are still ongoing, but I'm still going to weigh in with your predictions.;)
1. LA/Vancouver: You're close with this one. LA has a 3-1 lead, and with the way Quick as been playing, Vancouver will be hard pressed to win the last 3 games. That being said, nothing is impossible(Philly proved that in the 2010 playoffs) but it will be very difficult for Vancouver.
2. St. Louis/San Jose: San Jose has a 1-0 lead after 2 periods of tonight's game, but are still down 3-1 in games. Even if San Jose wins tonight, I agree with your prediction that St. Louis will win, just that it will take 6 games.
3. Phoenix/Chicago: Phoenix will win, especially now that Hossa has been taken out of the lineup. Torres received a 25 game suspension, but I don't think that will affect Phoenix. I think that Phoenix will finish the Hawks in 5. And I also agree with you 100% that Phoenix shouldn't have a team.
4. Detroit/Nashville: You were totally wrong with this one.;) Nashville beat Detroit 4-1, and the major reason for that was the spectacular play of Pekka Rinne! As with Phoenix, I don't want to see Nashville go very far(one of the reasons is that I don't believe they should have been allowed to have that player rejoin them for the playoffs...I can't recall his name at the moment). I also think that Shea Weber should have been suspended for a game for his bush-league stunt against Zetterburg.
5. Ottawa/New York: I agree that this will probably be the tightest contest of all. They are tied 2-2 in games, and Ottawa is currently ahead 1-0 with about 13 minutes left in the third period. I think that (unfortunately) Ottawa will win this in 6 games.
6. New Jersey/Florida: Much to the chagrin of dauls, I have to agree with your prediction. Florida just shutout New Jersey tonight, and now hold a 3-2 game lead. Florida (unfortunately) in 6 games.
7. Pittsburgh/Philadelphia: If you had told me after the first 3 games that it would be a 7-gamer with Pittsburgh winning, I'd look at you as if you'd lost your mind. However, the past two games have shown a drastic change in momentum. Philadelphia is no longer getting all the calls in their favour(and are getting more calls against them now), and Fleury is not quite the sieve he was, and Pittsburgh is playing with a lot more confidence. I do believe that if any team can come back in any of the first round series, it will be the Penguins. I agree with your prediction.
8. Boston/Washington: I can't honestly say who'll win this one. Neither team has totally blown the other out of the water. That being said, I'm going to pick Washington in 7 just because their goaltender has stolen a couple of games for them so far, and that reminds me of the "Halak run" for Montreal a couple of seasons ago.
One thing I will mention about the playoffs so far is that there have been some entertaining games, but there have also been far too many dirty plays. They need to put a stop to it, and hopefully the Torres suspension is a sign of things to come.

Couple of updates to my previous post.
1. Ottawa beat New York tonight 2-0 and now lead the series 3-2.
2. St. Louis scored two quick goals in the third period and now lead 2-1! There's only 4:43 left in the third period!
With four of the eight first-round Stanley Cup Playoff series completed, I thought I'd review my earlier predictions ... just for fun.
Los Angeles will beat Vancouver in six games -- a big UPSET and a huge blow to my imaginary NHL in which Los Angeles doesn't even have a team.
I took a lot of heat from my local hockey friends for this prediction, and it turns out I was wrong. Los Angeles only needed 5 games!
St. Louis will beat San Jose in five games.
I called the Blues over the Sharks in exactly the right number of games.
Phoenix will prevail over Chicago in six games, despite -- again -- that there shouldn't even be a hockey team in Arizona.
If the Coyotes win tonight, I will have called this one exactly. Chicago has home-ice advantage for Game 6, though, and the Coyotes are 0-7 in their history in games to win a first-round series.
Detroit will beat Nashville in seven games.
The only thing that would have made me more wrong on this prediction would have been for Nashville to sweep the Red Wings, rather than losing one game.
Ottawa will make the New York Rangers work much harder than anyone expects, but the Rangers will advance after six games.
I was definitely right that the Senators would make the Rangers work, and New York is facing elimination. I have very serious doubts now as to whether this series will end up with the victor I predicted.
Florida (another place that shouldn't have a hockey team) will beat the New Jersey Devils in six games.
If Florida wins Game 6, I will have predicted this one correctly.
Pittsburgh will defeat Philadelphia. It will take seven games, and there will be several Penguin players who are physically unable to advance to Round 2.
The Flyers have prevailed, and I was wrong. I am not surprised, given the poor play of the Penguins.
The Boston Bruins will beat Washington in six games.
I am already wrong on my Bruins prediction, as far as number of games, but I am confident that with Tyler Seguin and Brad Marchand finally coming alive, the Caps will have a difficult time prevailing at the Garden on Wednesday. The story of this series though far, though, is the amazing play of Washington goalie Braden Holtby.

New Jersey and Florida are currently tied 2-2 in the 1st OT.
Okay, the results are in. If I were playing baseball and batting .500, it would be impressive. In predicting hockey series outcomes, though, getting half of them correct doesn't seem like a very good record.
My predictions were:
Los Angeles will beat Vancouver in six games ...
I called the outcome correctly, although it took one fewer game.
St. Louis will beat San Jose in five games.
Another correct prediction, with the number of games exact.
Phoenix will prevail over Chicago in six games ...
Another exact prediction.
Detroit will beat Nashville in seven games.
It took Nashville only 5 games to prove me wrong.
Ottawa will make the New York Rangers work much harder than anyone expects, but the Rangers will advance after six games.
Ottawa gave the Rangers even more trouble than I expected, but the Rangers -- as I predicted -- finally prevailed.
Florida ... will beat the New Jersey Devils in six games.
I didn't want Florida to win, but my prediction was still incorrect. The Devils took the series in 7.
Pittsburgh will defeat Philadelphia. It will take seven games ...
Wrong!
The Boston Bruins will beat Washington in six games.
My heart is broken. Washington advances after 7 games.
Now for a stab at the next round. My predictions:
St. Louis will beat Los Angeles in 7 games.
Nashville will beat Phoenix in 6 games.
New York will beat Washington in 7 games.
Philadelphia will beat New Jersey in 7 games.
After the Bruins lost, I was really hoping the Ottawa Senators would win (even though it would have lowered my percentage of correct predictions). I would have rooted for a Canadian team to bring the Stanley Cup back to the country where hockey rules!
Now for a stab at the next round. My predictions:
St. Louis will beat Los Angeles in 7 games.
Nashville will beat Phoenix in 6 games.
New York will beat Washington in 7 games.
Philadelphia will beat New Jersey in 7 games.
Well, I'll be the first to admit that my predictions are not going so well, so far. Both Los Angeles and Phoenix are up 2-0 in their series. Could this be the Kings' year?!

Well, since LA just swept St. Louis out of the playoffs, I am now rooting for New Jersey! Go Devils! They currently hold a 3-1 lead in the series.
Yippi-skippi. The Coyotes just beat Nashville 2-1 and *YAWN!* advance to face the Kings. Boy, what a snorefest series that was.
The Rangers beat Washington 3-2 in OT, so they hold a 3-2 series lead so far.
Honestly, if it wasn't for the play of Mike Smith(who?) for Phoenix, they would not have gotten as far as they have so far. Hopefully, they make it no further, as I do not want Buttman any happier than he already is.
Where have all the hockey fans gone?
Since I've been so off with predictions after the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, I won't try again. I am inclined to root for the Rangers, though, only because I like to see Original 6 teams doing well (although I don't think I could ever root for Montreal, being a Bruins fan). I don't think there should even be hockey teams in Los Angeles or Phoenix. Yes, I know it's about the players and not the location (as I was sternly reminded by a friend recently), but seriously ... hockey in the Southwest United States?! :frown:

Not much worse than seeing a team from your division win it all!
Sharks beat Kings 4/6 during the year including the last two games of the regular season.
Like Jen, I am *SO* ready for some not hockey for a while!

Yeah, it was a pretty crappy end to the playoffs. Only one team would have been worse...the Coyotes. I don't want Buttman to have any more reason to try and keep that team there.

Having a bankrupt team win it, among horrible ratings might cause force changes.
The new schedule is out, I'm kindof m'eh about it. I hope the players agree to the realignment so we'll see all teams in the league home and away.
Can't get excited about the draft either, although I do enjoy the reactions of the young players after they've worked so hard their whole lives.
