View Full Version : FDA: Silicone breast implants won't last forever
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/23/fda-silicone-breast-implants_n_882476.html
Based on that data, FDA said Wednesday that 20 percent to 40 percent of patients who have implants for cosmetic reasons will need another operation to modify or remove them within eight to 10 years.
For reconstruction patients, the number is even higher at 40 to 70 percent, FDA said.
The most common complication remains scar tissue that hardens around the implant, and that can become severe enough to warp the shape of the breast or cause pain. Other problems include implant rupture, wrinkling and a lopsided appearance, according to the report.
So it seems that beautiful breasts today may not be so beautiful tomorrow. This would certainly make me think twice about getting implants.

They never should have been sold as a "Good for ever" product.
They all have a design life.
Newer materials are developed and their subsequent use in breast forms,
result in a longer design life.
But it is finite.
Also, products can go wrong.
I've a friend who had augmentation Mammaplasty (http://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/breast-augmentation.html) six years ago. with PIP implants.
She is having them replaced next month as a precaution.

I'll say you do. And they are very nice too, Jodie. :):respect:
How is this "News"? We've known this since the 1980s. Then on top of that there's the reason they kinda dropped off the market to be replaced mainly by Saline ones - which is that they are highly toxic if thgey break. And the fact that the body naturally breaks them down is the reason that since the early 90s women with silicone implants have been advised to get them replaced every 10 years.

they should be replaced every 10 years.... ANd get saline not silcone.... Saline is harmless if the implant leaks
Yep, saline all the way. Neither for me though, if mine keep growing at this rate.
